As the Electronic Technician, within the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) department, you will be responsible for performing general troubleshooting and electrical component overhaul and repair of complex electronic devices, as well as general light rail vehicle electrical systems.

Your success will be measured by your ability to complete work in a timely fashion, ability to diagnose and repair complex electrical/electronic systems and contributing to providing a safe and reliable service.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Work on both AC and DC voltages, up to 220 VAC 3ph and 1300 VDC, including diagnosing and repairing microprocessor-based solid-state control systems, analog systems, radio systems, and data processing equipment
  • Support the preventative maintenance process through overhaul of major electrical components of Light Rail Vehicles (e.g. Auxiliary Power Units, HVAC, Propulsion Systems)
  • Complete component overhauls outlined by manufacturers specifications and engineering manuals
  • Perform verification testing of major electrical components once overhauls are complete
  • Perform benchtop repairs on various electronic components of Light Rail vehicles, ranging from power electronics to low power circuit boards
  • Use electrical diagnostic equipment (e.g. oscilloscope, multimeter, testbench) to troubleshoot issues with electronic components
  • Repair electronic assemblies/circuit boards by identifying and replacing defective subcomponents
  • Perform verification testing of the electrical components once repairs are complete
  • Organize and monitor inventory needs of the electronics repair lab components inventory
  • Perform modifications to the electrical system in Light Rail Vehicles
  • Develop and/or follow Field Modification Instructions
  • Assist the Engineering team in performing validation testing on various electronic components, such as validating functionality of a replacement to an obsolete component
  • Perform onvehicle diagnosis and minor repairs of electrical systems
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Grade 12 or higher, or equivalent
  • Completion of an Engineering Technology Diploma in Telecommunications, Wireless Systems, Electronics or related communications technology diploma from a recognized institute of technology

OR
Possession of a Journeyperson Electronic Technician Certificate recognized by the Province of Alberta

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with electrical systems and equipment, including direct DC repair experience on LRV electrical systems or comparable heavy truck/marine systems
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trades applicable to work assignments
  • Working knowledge of computercontrolled power systems
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to follow and carry out instructions
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a larger collaborative team
  • Skilled in the use and care of the tools required to perform assignments
  • Strong computer skills, including networking, hyperterminal, scripts, programming, etc
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform moderate to heavy physical labor in various environmental conditions
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
