Columbia Containers is looking for a Payroll and Operations Accountant to join our team


Position Overview


Reporting to the Controller, the Accounts Payable Specialist is responsible for processing accounts payable, payroll, and supporting the Controller with all aspects of corporate accounting for the company in accordance with established policies and procedures.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Process vendor invoices with high efficiency and accuracy: this includes verifying, coding, organizing, and entering vendor invoices with proper approval from stakeholders.
  • Set up new vendors and respond to inquiries from vendors on a timely basis.
  • Facilitate payment of invoices due and send remittance details to vendor.
  • Reconcile the accounts payable ledger to ensure all bills and payments are accounted for and properly posted.
  • Support monthend and yearend close by preparing journal entries for bank reconciliation, account reconciliations and assisting with audit requirements.
  • Manage payroll runs, including running biweekly, semimonthly or any extra payrolls (union and nonunion).
  • Ensure payroll is processed in an accurate, compliant, and timely manner, answer inquiries, resolve issues, and mitigate risks.
  • Review payroll submissions to ensure that hours are properly approved and calculated according to collective agreements for unionized employees and employment contracts for nonunionized staff.
  • Prepare payrollrelated electronic payments, manual cheques, and vacation payments.
  • Handle other payroll related documentation and reports, including record of employment, pay slips, as well as relevant monthly, quarterly, and yearend reports.
  • Oversee payrollrelated remittances, like union dues, pension, and benefits.
  • Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Controller.

Experience & Education

  • Postsecondary education in accounting or CPA student
  • 2+ years of experience in Accounts Payable and general accounting experience
  • Experience with MS Dynamics (D365 Business Central) and Payworks Payroll system would be an asset
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Good understanding of full cycle accounting procedures
