SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES


Reporting to the Club Coordinator, the Assistant Coordinator has a range of responsibilities including program development and delivery of educational, recreational, and social-based activities for children and youth and supervision of part-time staff and volunteers.

This role focuses on programming within the Best Buy Teen Tech Centre, and the development and implementation of programs for children and youth 6-18 years old at the
Hillside Club.


JOB DUTIES

  • Supports the Club Coordinator in overseeing the daytoday operations of the assigned site.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements recreational, social and/or educational activities and programs designed to meet the needs of the children/youth who visit the Club programs and the Teen Tech Centre.
  • Provides basic computer maintenance, including file management, troubleshooting and technical support to Teen Tech Centre users.
  • Ensures that the physical, emotional, social, safety, wellbeing, first aid, and nutritional needs of participants are met within BGC program standards, guidelines, and policies.
  • Supports youth to explore and implement their projects in the Teen Tech Centre including planning for the future, pursuing academic and job opportunities that leverage skills and experience gained.
  • Participates in planning and implementing regular special events and day camps.
  • Provides behaviour management techniques and other best practices as outlined in the training segments and ccommunicates with Hillside Club Coordinator on any problems and concerns regarding participants, volunteers, facilities, and programs.
  • Assists in the recruitment, onboarding/orientation, supervision, and scheduling, for staff and volunteers.
  • May act on behalf of the Coordinator during vacation leaves, etc.
  • Ensures that accurate program records, reporting forms, etc. are completed in a timely manner and maintained with confidentiality in mind at all times.
  • Builds relationships with children, youth, parents, and community members and promotes the Teen Tech Centre program through outreach to potential participants (including from other BGC Clubs) and networking with schools and community service providers.
  • Monitors safe work practices of all staff and participants.
  • Works with the Club Coordinator to conduct safety and emergency procedures (May act as site safety officer).
  • Ensures that the facility is clean and tidy at the end of each program session and ensures that the facility is locked, and the alarm set at the end of the day.
  • Other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Clear Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • A degree in recreation, social services, child, and youth care, or equivalent _(a diploma in recreational programming, child and youth care or community service worker with experience in supervision and program planning)_.
  • Experience working with children and/or youth in a social recreational program setting.
  • Experience with and interest in computers and technology such as green screens and 3d printers (some training provided).
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively with program staff and the ability to form relationships with parents and children who attend the programs.
  • Proven behaviour management experience.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills with the ability to problem solve and find resolutions.
  • Excellent oral, written, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven time and general management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of computer software to generate and exchange information.
  • A Class IV license _(process must be initiated within 30 days and obtained within 6 months)_.
  • Child Care First Aid and CPR certification _(must be obtained within 3 months)_.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training _(must be obtained within 3 months)_.
  • Participating in BGC's training
  • Second language and experience working with culturally diverse people are assets.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings. This position is based on a 37.5hour work week. It is recognized that on occasion the Assistant Coordinator may be required to work flexible or additional hours due to the demands of a particular activity or situation. It is expected that the weekly schedule will be adjusted accordingly (time off) to stay within the parameters of the 37.5hour work week.


This is a full-time salary position ($39,000 to start), with group benefits at six months, pension after one year, three weeks paid sick leave in first year, paid sick and personal leave, birthday off and up to 5 days statutory holiday substitution days per year to celebrate/recognize religious, cultural, and/or personal days that are important to the employee where those days are not currently recognized as statutory holidays in BC/Canada).
