- Responsible for the management of fieldwork for complex and/or large surveying projects.
- Consults with internal stakeholders such as Design, Construction and Parks & Recreation regarding requirements and extent of survey for preparation of survey information to support the Roads and Active Transportation Capital Program.
- Provides mentorship to field survey team on what data is to be collected, the proper methods of collecting that data, and required accuracies for topographical and construction surveys necessary to support the Capital Infrastructure and Active Transportation Program.
- Applies municipal design guidelines and policies to develop and produce surveys for Capital projects.
- Assists the Supervisor, Survey Technicians with the development of Standard Operating Procedures and quality assurance duties including reviewing internal and external record drawing information as per best practices.
- Assists Senior Land Surveyor with analysis of documentary evidence and comparison with collected field survey data for determination of street lines and/or property boundaries.
- Responsible for downloading survey data from Leica total stations and Leica Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers and processing that data in established HRM formats using HRM software, Leica Geo Office, Civil 3D and Star*Net
- Responsible for filling and archiving processed survey data in accordance with established HRM protocols and in established HRM formats.
- Creates necessary data files and uploads to Leica total stations and GNSS receivers for positional layout by field survey teams.
- Searches HRM files, Property Online, Registry of Deeds, Land Registration Office, various other Provincial and Federal departments, private land surveyors and other sources for street title information and prepares reports for various internal and external clients.
- Searches HRM files for street line and other survey related information for internal and external clients and delivers same, in a timely fashion, to clients in hard copy or electronic form as requested.
- Provides technical review, mentorship, guidance, and senior assistance to survey colleagues and other HRM departments.
- Trains survey staff in the use of field surveying equipment and data processing software.
- Responsible for ensuring HRM survey equipment is maintained and calibrated as necessary and instructs staff in proper use of equipment
- Responsible for maintaining, storing, and archiving project notes, data files, and documentary information in established HRM hard copy and electronic filing systems.
- Performs other surveying related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology (2 years) from Nova Scotia Community College or other recognized institution.
- Minimum six (6) years' of progressively responsible experience in an urban surveying and engineering environment, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's License and an acceptable Driver's Abstract.
- Certification in WHMIS, emergency first aid, traffic control and temporary workplace signage as per requirements of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act or be willing to obtain. Technical/Job Specific Knowledge & Abilities
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of civil/municipal surveying practices
- Possessing advanced skills in operation and support of survey data adjustment software, such as, Microsurvey Star*Net and automated drafting software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D would be an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of requirements and methods of research for survey information using Nova Scotia Property Online and at the Registry of Deeds, Land Registration Office, Provincial and Federal government departments, private survey firms, utility companies and other sources.
- Thorough knowledge of proper methods of collection of field survey data and of processing that data.
- Thorough knowledge of analyzing field data for inconsistencies and of methods of correcting those inconsistencies.
- Basic knowledge of drafting principals and data presentation for survey projects.
- Knowledge of project management principles and quality control processes applicable to municipal surveying.
- Working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Coordinate Referencing System and the various adjustments thereof.
- High level of expertise in accurately completing 3-dimensional field surveys.
- Thorough knowledge of the operation of Leica total stations and Leica GNSS equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of HRM's specifications and guidelines for the collection and layout of positional information.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and internet browser.
- Working knowledge of the principles of legal surveying and municipal engineering as they apply to the position. Please note : Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge.

The Senior Survey Technician is responsible for the collection of field survey data, processing of the data to established HRM formats and for distribution of data files and plots to internal and external clients for various types of engineering and construction survey projects in support of HRM's Roads and Active Transportation Capital Program as well as the surveying needs of other HRM business units.

SALARY: NSGEU Local 222 Level 8; $38.48 hourly
