ABOUT THE YOUTH & EDUCATION INITIATIVE

  • The Youth & Education Initiative works closely with Ocean Wise's conservation initiatives (Seaforestation, Whales, Seafood and Plastics) to translate our worldclass conservation research, knowledge and actions into exciting and engaging programs that empower individuals and communities to make meaningful behavioural changes that positively impact our ocean.
  • The Education team, as part of the Youth & Education Initiative, empowers K12 students and their communities and equips them with skills to protect and restore our ocean through virtual programs that include Aquaclasses and Pro-D Workshops; asynchronous resources such as Discovery Kits and Education Kits for formal and informal educators; and inperson programs like Ocean Wise Sea Dome and other out in the community outreach programs.

  • This is a Vancouver, BC based position. The hourly rate for this role is $20/hr._
  • This position is also available in a casual contract (20h/ week)._
Key Accountabilities

Support of Youth & Education programs by:

  • Work closely with the Manager and other Ocean Wise colleagues to deliver in-person and virtual programs to large and small groups, in formal and informal settings;-
  • Travel with the Ocean Wise Sea Dome across British Columbia during the school year and other locations as required;-
  • Maintain good working knowledge of marine animals, ecosystems, and conservation issues;-
  • Provide excellent customer service and support to all Youth & Education program clients (principals, teachers, event organizers, participants);-
  • Track and maintain program feedback records, participant numbers etc.;Occasional delivery of formal or informal online programming.-
  • Care, monitor and maintain program equipment and marine specimens as required;
  • Consciously desires to improve the organization and its processes by:
  • Lead and aid in Emergency protocol;-
  • Maintain and improve organizational safety standards;-
  • Continually improve our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;-
  • Actively demonstrate Ocean Wise's values and expectations for conduct;-
  • Performs additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience- Working on or has completed a Bachelor's degree in Science, Education, Conservation or equivalent experience; Knowledge of marine and aquatic habitats, and conservation issues; Experience working with children in an interpretive setting; Experience giving live presentations; Experience implementing and evaluating innovative educational programs. Experience using online platforms such as MS Teams, Zoom or Google Meets. Preferably experience in hosting meetings or webinars. Valid BC driver's license in good standing; with recent driving experience; Capable and comfortable driving fleet vehicles (minivan, pickup truck, electric vehicle, with a trailer); training will be provided;- Skills- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and presentation skills; Experience in problem-solving and resolving interpersonal issues; Ability to work as a cooperative member of a dynamic team, as well as independently; Must be organized, creative, flexible, and enthusiastic with a positive attitude; Fluency in French with strong verbal and written French communication skills (preference for strong verbal skills); Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with people of all ages; Actively demonstrates the organization's goals, values, and mission; Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs; Working knowledge of video conferencing platforms such as MS Teams, Zoom, etc

  • Working Conditions:
  • Shifts can be scheduled Sunday to Saturday (including holidays) to average 37.5 hours weeks. Shifts will largely be scheduled Monday-Friday;
  • Workdays could involve early morning, long hours and overnights; overtime will be paid based on the Employment Standards Act of British Columbia.
  • Travelling is required, occasionally up to four weeks at a time on the road with the Sea Dome Tour (travel within Canada); food and accommodation are covered;
  • Lifting heavy objects on a daily basis applicants must be able to lift and move 20 Kgs to chest level;
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time may be expected;
