Under the general direction of the Manager, Desktop & Network Support, provides comprehensive computer, network, and website support for the Faculty of Science to facilitate teaching, research, and administration.

Liaises with SFU IT Services, Science Technical Centre, and other Science Computing support personnel.


Qualifications:
High school graduation and two years of post-secondary education or formal certificate/diploma program equivalent in computing technology.
3 years related experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study ad experience is acceptable.

  • Excellent knowledge of UNIX, Windows and Macintosh operating systems and Mac and PCbased desktop computer hardware and software.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer networking administration and administering, designing, and maintaining a web site including setting up social networking sites.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer programming (e.g., Visual Basic, C++, and LabView) with advanced understanding of structured programming techniques.
  • Excellent knowledge of network and file transfer protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, IPX, VIP, AFP, SCP, SSH, SFTP, and WebDAV) and the ability to track, trace and identify network problems.
  • Excellent knowledge of virus detection and protection software and techniques.
  • Excellent knowledge of a wide range of science laboratory resource needs, equipment / instrumentation, materials, technologies, methods and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of data backup hardware and software.
  • Good knowledge of use and configuration of file servers.
  • Good knowledge of research techniques and strategies.
  • Excellent skills in writing technical instructions, problem statements, and instructions.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to install, configure, and perform routine repair of computer and peripherals hardware.

  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to handle confidential material with discretion.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to diagnose and suggest solutions for computer hardware and software problems in a networked environment.
  • Ability to perform computer hardware, printer, scanner, and router installations and repairs (e.g., install memory, hard disks, network cards, replace/fix power supplies and fans, etc.) in a networked environment.
  • Ability to operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform basic equipment maintenance (e.g., soldering).
  • Ability to work as a member a team.
  • Ability to lift, move or carry equipment or materials up to 20 kg.
