The Opportunity
Mosaic is seeking a Log Purchaser to work out of our Nanaimo office on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.


The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, Log Purchase, the Log Purchaser will be a member of the team responsible for purchasing logs to meet log marketing strategies and corporate objectives.


Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership in safety and environment through personal example;
  • Adhering to and demonstrating a commitment to corporate values on a daily basis;
  • Contributing to the maintenance of the Company's ISO, SFI and PEFC certifications;
  • Supporting the company's Progressive Aboriginal Relations certification, currently Silver Level;
  • Develop and maintain enduring business relationships with log suppliers including First Nations, other private landowners and tenure holders;
  • Supporting the maintenance of relationships with local customers in Coastal BC;
  • Assisting Log Traders in the sale of miscellaneous minor enduse sorts (EUS) on Vancouver Island, and other sorts as directed;
  • Undertaking timber assessment, pro forma analysis, harvest planning, and contract management;
  • Anticipating and responding to market changes by developing tactical action plans that include revising EUS/manufacturing specifications/priorities, increasing or decreasing volumes purchased, and targeting specific products and suppliers to maximize overall benefits to the Company and suppliers;
  • Managing log purchase production in collaboration with the Operations, Sales, Product Planning and Supply Chain groups to achieve target inventory levels; and
  • Managing inventory to minimize value loss due to pests, weather, sinkage, etc.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years' experience in the BC forest industry;
  • Registered Professional Forester, or Registered Forest Technician (RPF/RFT), or can demonstrate eligibility and progress towards RPF/RFT registration is preferred but not required;
  • Working knowledge of coastal log species, EUS, and log markets;
  • Superior interpersonal, oral and written communications skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment; and
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence.
