About the Role


Reporting to the Controller, the Financial Reporting Analyst serves as a key member of the Finance and Admin Team and works closely with them to ensure accurate financial reporting, efficient processes and adherence & compliance with the requirements & deadlines for various sources of funding.


The Financial Reporting Analyst will primarily focus on the CCAI Chair funding by developing financial reporting and maintaining budgets and forecasts to keep the CCAI Chair spending on schedule.

The Financial Reporting Analyst ensures that the books and accounting records are kept in accordance with GAAP, transactions are in compliance with the funder's financial policies & procedures and are documented and supported.

The Financial Reporting Analyst completes projects and provides assistance whenever necessary including assisting with reporting on Amii's various other sources of government funding.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:

  • Ensuring Compliance with GAAP and the terms and conditions of government funding agreements

Key Responsibilities:


  • Reviews, analyzes, and monitors financial transactions to ensure accurate financial records are maintained
  • Communicates with internal stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely responses and resolutions to issues
  • Ensures adherence, compliance with CIFAR agreement terms and conditions
  • Creates forecasting processes, including forecast documents, templates and designing forecasting tools and guidelines for the CCAI Chairs;
  • Prepares financial reports and financial analysis for the AI Chairs, Amii Finance Team and various internal/external stakeholders;
  • Develops and integrates consolidated budgets and forecasts for the AI Chairs and Affiliate Chairs;
  • Works collaboratively with the U of A Finance Team and the AI Chairs;
  • Acts as a key contact for Amii and Affiliate Chairs for their CCAI accounts;
  • Prepares Chair Award Letter Agreement package;
  • Designs financial queries, reporting tools, and analytical methods to achieve financial goals;
  • Works with supervisor and U of A Finance Team to deliver long range AI Chairs budget plans and forecasts that align with longterm academic priorities;
  • Identifies and advises supervisor of opportunities to improve processes, using technology to improve accountability, quality and timeliness of reporting;
  • Assists in annual planning and reporting to internal/external stakeholders and granting agencies;
  • Communicates with the U of A Finance Team to ensure accurate and timely responses and resolutions to issues;
  • Advises the Finance Team of risks, internal control or reporting issues, budget/forecast variances and provides recommendations for resolution and/or resolves independently;
  • Monitors CCAI budgetary expenditure authority and communicates issues to Amii Finance Team;
  • Reconciles accounts for errors and anomalies; identifies sources of errors and recommends action to resolve. Interprets and implements audit policies and procedures;
  • Provides financial advice to the AI Chairs in advance of the hiring terms for their best decision making;
  • Assists AI Chairs with the yearend processes in accordance with CIFAR and U of A Financial Services time frame and requirements;
  • Anticipates stakeholders needs and proactively addresses concerns;
  • Escalates issues and necessary corrections to Amii Finance Team or UofA Finance Team;
  • Interprets CIFAR Chair policies and communicates/advises Amii Finance Team and CCAI Chairs;
  • Plans and delivers information and training sessions to CCAI Chairs as required;
  • Financial reporting for other government funding sources as required
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to personal, faculty, and financial information;
  • Completes ad hoc reporting and financial requests, and projects as assigned

Required Qualifications:


  • Four (4) year degree required in the field of Accounting or Finance or Business Administration and/or equivalent; working towards CPA designation would be an asset
  • Minimum 35 years of related experience in enterprise financial environment, including experience with budgeting, financial operations, forecasting, reporting and analysis; experience in a postsecondary environment would be an asset
  • Strong problem solving skills. Experience in investigating problems and developing solutions
  • Highly proficient in MS Office environment, excellent data analysis skills and abilities (must be advanced expert in MS Excel, including knowledge of advanced tools, pivot tables, formulas, and conditional formatting); experience with Quickbooks Desktop is an asset
  • Understanding of GAAP (Generally accepted accounting principles), fund accounting
