Clinical Associate, Food Animal Field Service, Veterinary Medical Centre
The Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) is seeking a qualified veterinarian to join our food animal ambulatory service team within the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC). The successful applicant must have a proven interest in food animal practice and an interest in coaching and mentoring veterinary students. This position offers predictable work and on-call schedule that will be shared by other veterinarians in the service, which currently includes four other practitioners.
The WCVM ) is western Canada's regional college of veterinary medicine. Approximately 88 students from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and northern jurisdictions are admitted each year to the DVM program. The College also includes approximately 200 interns, residents, and other graduate students.
Located within the WCVM, the VMC ) is a state-of-the-art AVMA and AAHA accredited veterinary hospital and referral centre serving western Canada and offering specialty services with undergraduate and graduate training in anesthesia; dentistry; dermatology; exotic, wild, and zoo animal medicine; internal medicine; medical imaging; nutrition; oncology; ophthalmology; surgery; and theriogenology.
Primary Purpose: The Food Animal Field Service (FAFS) Clinical Associate provides food animal ambulatory service to clients of the VMC. This position also participates in the clinical instruction, supervision, and mentorship of students enrolled in the undergraduate Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Program.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Head of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences ), you will work as a member of the Field Service Section providing clinical service within the VMC. The Clinical Associate must have a good understanding of WCVM and VMC policies and procedures to appropriately meet the needs of clients and students. The work can be physically demanding, and you must be able to deal with emerging and unpredictable events involving large animals. This position is primarily a field service-based position but has a small component of in-house clinical services.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Duties will include:
Provision of clinical service, including on-call and afterhours, to clients of the food animal ambulatory practice and bovine reproductive service at the VMC.
Participation in the teaching and mentorship of veterinary undergraduate students.
Ensuring the maintenance and growth of the caseload of the food animal ambulatory and reproductive services at the VMC.
Assistance in providing additional teaching duties as assigned.
Education: Candidates are required to have a minimum of a DVM degree or equivalent, with preference given to those with an advanced degree, appropriate specialty board certification, or both.
Licenses: Candidates are required to be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Saskatchewan. Candidates must possess, or be eligible for, a Saskatchewan driver's license, and must have an acceptable driving record, as determined by the University of Saskatchewan.
Experience: Experience in mixed or food animal practice is considered desirable but is not a requirement.
Skills: Applicants should have a strong foundation in the practice of clinical veterinary medicine; the ability to utilize and assimilate available clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care; demonstrated initiative, integrity, collegiality, and professionalism, along with effective oral and written communication skills. Effective time management, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills are assets. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel in the assigned region.
