Position Summary
Under the direction of the Vocational Coordinator, the Vocational Counsellor is responsible for assisting individuals
with intellectual disabilities in the acquisition of vocational skills to obtain and maintain competitive employment in
the community. The Vocational Counsellor is responsible for successfully facilitating clients' journeys through the
development and implementation of employment action plans, including developing pre-employment and
employment skills, setting employment goals and seeking competitive employment opportunities.


Role & Responsibilities:


  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and clients.
  • Provide individual emotional, physical, social and vocational support to clients in a respectful and caring manner.
  • Conduct vocational assessments and interest testing with clients to determine skills and abilities.
  • Assess academic aptitudes, physical stamina, and various skill areas in relation to vocational planning.
  • Observe and assess onsite task execution and workrelated behaviours in relation to vocational planning.
  • Work with clients in the development of preemployment and employment skills including one to one supports and group facilitation.
  • Assist clients in developing employment goals, an employment action plan and seeking competitive employment opportunities.
  • Conduct job coaching and provide individualized followup.
  • Provide community based support and workplace assessments, when required.
  • Identify possible learning barriers and determine effective training and support methods for each client.
  • Identify and recommend any assistive devices or equipment, as well as any other support or community resources that may enhance the client's ability to obtain meaningful employment.
  • Promote independence and encourage decisionmaking through recognition and respect of each client's interest and choices.
  • Perform administrative duties including completing communication books/logs, incident reports and maintaining effective communication with management, coworkers, clients and the community.

Skills & Qualifications:


  • Minimum of one year of direct vocational support experience preferred.
  • Working understanding of adult learning principles and the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Experience in task analysis, instructional methods, group facilitation, and evaluation techniques.
  • Knowledge of client marketing strategies.
  • Excellent written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain accurate records and reports as required.
  • Sound knowledge of intellectual disabilities and experience working in the field is an asset.
  • A genuine interest in and respect for people from all walks of life.
  • Patience, understanding and the ability to listen nonjudgmentally.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in computer use is required.
  • Certificate in Disability and Community Support is an asset.
  • Must have a Full Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.

Work Hours

  • Full Time
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 am4:30 pm
  • Must be able to flex work hours based on position needs
