Compensation Range

Job Summary


The Store Manager is responsible for managing the operations of the sales floor on the Vancouver campus and the overall merchandise management for all locations (UBCV and UBCO bookstores, Corner Store, Sauder Store and Beaty Museum Store) with the focus of providing excellent customer service to the UBC community.

The position is responsible for providing strategic management and leadership of multiple core functions and systems including managing administration, financial operations, and administrative/financial functions of large complex systems.

Responsibilities include directing the buying team in planning merchandise assortments in all categories including course materials, budgeting inventory levels, margins, expenses, and oversight of the sales floor and cash functions for the main store.

The Store Manager develops and implements financial operations strategies to ensure a profitable return on investment. Provides guidance and leadership to the Bookstore team on operational processes and financial functions.

The Store Manager monitors vendor relations and supports the buying team to identify new products and services that will augment the store's selection and enhance revenues.


Working Conditions:
Works in an office environment within a retail store. Has their own office and computer. Must be able to work weekends and flexible hours. Must be able to stand for long periods of time while working on the retail sales floor. Some travel required for conferences and trade shows.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Director.

Champions the needs of the sales floor and procurement teams, while working with the other members of the Management Group to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Bookstore.

Work Performed


Management Group- As a member of the Management team, works to support the overall management of the Bookstore business.- In the absence of the Director or Associate Director, may be assigned responsibility for the operation of the Bookstore.


Planning- Actively contributes to the strategic and long-term planning for the Bookstore.- Develops comprehensive policies, financial procedures, cost controls and systems to improve efficiencies.

Develops and reviews key operational control.- Participates in tactical planning, and in budget preparation, collecting, analyzing and interpreting market intelligence.- Establishes budgets and/or targets for sales, margins, inventory levels, merchandise assortment, and staffing in defined areas of direct responsibility to meet financial goals.- Oversees the acquisition of course materials for UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses and manages inventory levels within budget, limiting losses where possible.


Merchandise Management- Oversees the merchandise selection within the Bookstore to achieve budgeted return on investment.- Oversees preparation of reporting, forecasts, cost analysis, performance measures, and statistics reports.- Annually establishes the sales, gross margin, inventory and expense budget for the merchandise division.

Monitors this budget regularly and makes appropriate changes, as necessary, to ensure profitability within each department using the 'open to buy' system.- Manages inventory levels to ensure appropriate balance per department, acceptable stockturns and the recognition and disposal of obsolescent inventory.- Negotiates and establishes appropriate terms and conditions with vendors on behalf of the buying team.- Working with the buyers, develops integrated marketing goals and plans for the merchandise division, which recognize the strengths of the "brick and mortar store/s" and the on-line store.- Researches changes in the retail marketplace to seek opportunities for new product lines, sales concepts or operating methods.
