Aecon Industrial is looking to add a detail oriented, Design Manager to our team Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Design Manager on our Design-Build projects, through Early Contractor Involvement and Open Book negotiation, will utilize and create opportunities to challenge and improve project designs.


What You Will Do Here

  • Reviews and manages design processes through a continuous improvement lens.
  • Responsible for design, integration, interface management, requirements fulfillment and will provide direction to the projects engineering teams to support in delivering the specified technical requirements to contract schedules.
  • Coordination of all technical interfaces, review technical documentation of each subsystems involved in the dedicated interfaces and then participate to Change Control Process of subsystems engineering activities.
  • Ensure compliance of contractual requirements at all stages (design, integration, validation) including all temporary works and staging.
  • The primary point of contact for all feedback to and from the design team relating to designer and owner design documents, reports, and presentation materials.
  • Ensures the team is meeting compliance and contractual obligations and notify the team of any risks relating to this.
  • Communicates and drives design submissions and schedules to meet permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover requirements.
  • Manages and communicates the flow of design information and feedback between the project stakeholders and internal teams to align with the project execution plan.
  • Creates and monitors design and engineering schedule, implementing any improvement required.
  • Supports in the production of the Design Management Plan with the engineer, for the project to ensure project execution times lines are met.
  • Writes and revises the rules related with design management processes such as RFIs, SIs, change management etc.
  • Establishes and drives design deviation request process as required by contract.
  • Delivers the Value engineering process to influence design in the schematic and development stages.
  • Ensures the engineer is meeting compliance and contractual obligations and notify the project team of any risks relating to this.
  • Manages these and other duties as required for the design management of either or both of a project pursuit and/or project execution/construction.

What You Will Bring to The Team

  • Postsecondary education or training in engineering, mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in construction management as a Project Manager, Risk Manager, or a related role
  • Minimum 10 years of designbuild / EPC experience or as a Design Manager on major projects with complex elements such as fast track, heritage, P3, design build etc.
  • Understanding of Process plant construction means and methods, including staging, modularisation and temporary works.
  • P.Eng designation considered a minimum requirement
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills including the ability to manage project budgets and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate meetings by encouraging collaboration and problem a lead capacity, manage engineering staff and thirdparty design subcontracts.
