    Thank you for your interest in a career as a Sign Language Interpreter with the York Region District School Board. We require staff who will be responsible for facilitating communication through sign language for students who are deaf/hard of hearing between students, teachers, support staff, parents and others involved in educational programs and the school community in compliance with Board policies and procedures.

    Salary: $ $36.83

    Please Note: You may also be considered for temporary and/or permanent opportunities as they arise throughout the year.

    Casual Positions: On call, as-needed basis to cover absences of permanent employees ranging from daily occurrences up to 30 consecutive working days.

    Temporary Positions: This is a position that is available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days to replace a permanent employee who is absent on an approved leave of absence (e.g. pregnancy, parental, educational or medical leave).

    Permanent Positions: These are full-time positions (35 hours per week).

    Major Responsibilities:

    • To translate spoken language to sign language and sign language to spoken language between people who are hearing and people who are deaf/hard of hearing.
    • To provide sign interpretation services in a variety of settings, first and foremost facilitating the integration of students who are deaf/hard of hearing with their peers in regular classes.
    • To prepare and gather knowledge of classroom materials in advance to gain thorough understanding to allow for a clearer interpretation in regular classes or other integrated settings.
    • To ensure appropriate seating, lighting and unobstructed space is available to students who are deaf/hard of hearing in order to access the interpreted message.
    • To participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the student's Individual Education Plan (I.E.P).
    • To liaise between the teacher of the deaf and regular teachers regarding any issues arising in regular classes which may impact student progress (i.e. student skill development, behaviour, peer interactions, etc.).
    • To assist in writing daily anecdotal reports, record and help with on-going reporting of student's programs, and act as a resource person for parent/teacher interviews.
    • To provide note taking services for deaf/hard of hearing students as necessary, when interpreting is not required.
    • To assist the teacher of the deaf with inservicing of staff, parents/guardians, students and others regarding the needs of students who are deaf/hard of hearing and accommodations/modifications of these needs.
    • To work as an active member of the school team to ensure the safety and success of all students.
    • To attend meetings as required.
    • To attend professional development sessions/training as required.
    • To perform other duties as assigned.

    Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

    • Secondary School Graduation Diploma with a three-year recognized community college diploma or university degree from an accredited interpreter training program is required.
    • Minimum one year related experience is required.

    Additional Information:

    • Employees are expected to work at least 30 days within the current school year to remain on the casual list. Please note that hours of operation in our schools could start as early as 7:30 a.m. and end as late as 4:30 p.m. The Board highly recommends that employees accept as many shifts as possible throughout the year to encourage advancement within the Board.

    Important Information for CUPE 1734 Members:

    LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position. Ten (10) month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services.
