SCOPE

Reporting to the Director, of Communications and, in his absence, to the Manager, Publications and Projects, the incumbent is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of communications strategies, plans and tactics to foster alumni and donor engagement.

The Communications Advisor executes strategies and produces materials in support of editorial, fundraising, stewardship, engagement and marketing projects.

The incumbent provides direct communications expertise to university leaders, alumni, donors and volunteers in support of events, editorial products and special projects that advance engagement and philanthropy.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement and produce strategic editorial, fundraising, stewardship, engagement and marketing plans and tactics to effectively convey university goals across web, social media, audio and video platforms, and in print.
  • Plan, develop and implement marketing, editorial, stewardship, fundraising and communications strategies as well as tactics that enhance alumni and donor engagement. Regularly assess client and sector needs to generate solutions.
  • Advise university leaders, donors, volunteers, fundraisers, alumni officers and other stakeholders on shared projects. Liaise and collaborate with university partners as needed. Instruct graphic designers on project direction and inform stakeholders of individual and collective successes.
  • Represent unit and occasionally represent Director of Communications at meetings. Serve as relationship manager with key volunteers and donors.
  • Produce executivelevel work and provide strategic counsel to peers and freelancers alike on Canadian Press (CP) Style, Tone of Voice and Concordia Editorial Guidelines. Ensure personal and sector work is of the highest quality. Occasionally proofread and edit the work of others to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Develop content strategies for social media — Facebook Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube etc. — to foster stakeholder pride, engagement and affinity to Concordia. Analyze metrics to streamline messaging, segment audiences and align directions.
  • Support Manager, Publications and Projects in producing Concordia University Magazine. Factcheck stories. Proofread mockups and ensure content meets university standards. Ensure content is produced and disseminated through multiple touchpoints or social channels.
  • Prioritize customercentric approach, collaborate with freelance writers and benchmark products.
  • Collaborate and liaise with UCS and other UA units to ensure alignment with best practices.
  • Proactively perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications or Manager, Publications and Projects.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or Marketing or in a field related to the primary responsibilities and two to four years of experience in advancement communications.
  • Superior writing and editing skills.
  • Very good knowledge (Level 5) of written and spoken English communication skills. Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken French to communicate with volunteers, internal clients, external contacts and suppliers.
  • Experience with video production, web writing and design, graphic design and photography; familiarity with accessibility standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web content management systems (AEM or other).
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills. Skilled in diplomacy, patience, and political tact.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Experience in delivering a variety of mid
- to large-scale projects simultaneously.
