Reporting to the Director, Strategic Infrastructure Planning, the Space Planner's primary role is to support the optimal use of NAIT's principal asset.

The Space Planner, in consultation with the Director, ensures that space planning is proactive and responsive to NAIT's strategic goals and initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Establish guidelines and standards, best practices and expert judgment to develop solutions and provide recommendations that meet the NAIT's educational and business needs while ensuring highest and best use of space.
  • Provides support for new construction and renovations. On larger projects, this position may provide input to and review of consultant's functional programs, test fits, code compliance, schematic layouts/designs, stack plans, room numbering plans, finishes and furniture selection as applicable. For small to medium scale projects, this position may directly perform that work and provide recommendations.
  • Supports the planning and development of the annual major renovation, major maintenance, and capital furniture programs by reviewing potential space impacts and providing options and recommendations.
  • Provide support to campus planning initiatives. This position will also present reports and recommendations to the Space Management Committee and the Campus Planning Advisory Committee.
  • Responsible for the space inventory data, including classification and assignment of space.
  • Assist in the development of policies, guidelines, procedures, and standards for Strategic Infrastructure Planning.
  • Space planning to enable the functions of NAIT business units and optimize the use of NAIT facilities.
  • Consult with business units on current space allocations, anticipated needs and potential business changes that may impact space.
  • Review space requests, develop options and recommendations for space accommodations and allocations; consult with the requester and affected stakeholders.
  • Support planning and development of annual major renovation, major maintenance and capital furniture programs by reviewing space impacts, providing options and recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain a multiyear cycle of current space allocation and projected needs for all business units, including enrollment and staff growth.
  • Develop and/or provide input and review to functional programs, test fits, code compliance, schematic layouts/designs, stack plans, room numbering plans, finishes and furniture selection as required.
  • Provide technical support for planning initiatives.
  • Supervise, train and mentor junior staff, including reviewing of work.

Skills & Abilities:


  • Knowledge of AutoCAD; Alberta Building and Fire Codes; accessibility standards and barrier free requirements; Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite.
  • Experience with space management systems (e.g. AiM) is an asset.
  • This position requires frequent contact with stakeholders in order to determine space needs and to present options and proposed solutions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required in order to fully understand requests, be sensitive to other stakeholders' interests and to gain acceptance of recommended solutions.
  • Understanding of furniture systems, specifications and general inventory management is an asset.
  • Communication is key to this position.
The Space Planner must be able to communicate through a variety of means:
listening, presenting, providing input, sending and receiving information, presenting information in written and drawn form.

These skills are required to ensure effective work relationships and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to resolve potentially difficult issues.

As a primary contact with stakeholders, the creation of a positive image for FMD is important.

  • Capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities as needed to meet the evolving needs of the institution.

Qualifications:


  • A diploma in Architecture or Interior Design (a degree is preferred).
  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in space/facility planning.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and engagement skills.
  • Adept working within a team and independently.
  • Ability to manage and facilitate stakeholder engagement.
  • Knowledge of space planning, and interior design principles and architectural standards and practices is required.

Remuneration:
$73, $ 98,379.58 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Senior project coordinator)

  • This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement._
