Compensation Range

Job Summary


Reporting to the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach, the Assistant Manager, the Assistant Manager, Indigenous Outreach leads the implementation of accessible outreach programming through administration, operational planning, communications, and strategic plan.

Key duties include managing relationships with up to 35 community partners (including 25 Indigenous communities), overseeing a program budget of $500,000, serving 2000 youth annually and seeking out opportunities for program growth.

The Assistant Manager, Indigenous Outreach also supports with Geering Up's overall Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

Organizational Status


BC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is the flagship outreach program of the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Applied Science and a key part of Applied Science's diversity and community engagement strategies.

Geering Outreach Programs promote science, engineering, math, and technology to children and youth in British Columbia through fun, innovative hands-on experiments and projects.

In alignment with Applied Science's goal of student recruitment, Geering Up strives to reach all children and youth, regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture or socio-economic status, with special outreach for those groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering.

Geering Up provides valuable work experience to its employees, and enriches the university and community. Geering Up Outreach Programs are well-established with a 25-year history, and a large returning clientele that grows every year.


Due to the nature of the work, vacations are limited during the months of May-June; and are restricted in July and August.

Working hours will be typically Monday to Friday and will reflect operational hours as required. Ability to travel to other locations in BC and other remote work locations as required.

Work Performed

Operational planning and management

  • Oversee Geering Up Outreach Programs, ensuring that its work aligns with the mandate and mission of the Geering Up organization as a whole, Applied Science, and the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan.
  • Responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Geering Up Outreach programs and services.
  • Manage an annual budget of $500,000 for the Geering Up Outreach Programs; plan and implement cost saving measures and prepare monthly reports on budget health for the Manager, Geering Up Outreach and Administration.
  • Create systems for the Geering Up InSTEM team to facilitate delivery of Indigenous Outreach programs across BC through a team of over 25 student staff annually delivering 50,000 hours of facetoface programming.
  • Develop and grow accessible programming for Black youth, youth with disabilities, new immigrants etc through partnership with community organizations.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate administrative policies, procedures, and practices for the efficient operation and administration of Geering Up InSTEM Programs.
  • Responsible for fullcycle recruitment of Geering Up InSTEM student staff, interns and volunteers. Identifies staffing requirements, schedules and conducts interviews, writes offer letters and manages performance and development of staff; liaising with APSC Human Resources and the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach as needed.
  • Responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, performance management, discipline and termination of direct reports working with APSC Human Resources when required. Provides oversight to indirect reports.
  • Develop staff training initiatives to ensure effective orientation, team building, ongoing development and retention of staff.
  • Review and resource training for Geering Up outreach staff including Indigenous cultural sensitivity, the history of Indian Residential Schools, Anti-Racism and other Equity and Inclusion concepts.
  • Maintain a positive, healthy, and safe work environment that encourages diversity and people engagement.
  • Maintain a performance management process, in alignment with UBC policies and practices and in collaboration with APSC HR, for all programs
