Position Summary:


For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia's leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.


The Exhibit Technician works within the Exhibits and Facilities team to fabricate, install, maintain, and repair exhibits within Discovery Centre's permanent and temporary galleries while providing support to other departments in the fulfillment of Discovery Centre's mission.

The primary focus of the technician is the daily care, maintenance, and repair of exhibit components with the goal of ensuring safe, engaging experiences for all of Discovery Centre's visitors.


Description of Tasks:

The Exhibit Technician works in the Exhibits & Facilities department and reports to the Director of Exhibits & Facilities.

The primary tasks of the position are:

  • Keeping all exhibitrelated equipment in good working order by conducting routine inspections and carrying out repairs
  • Maintaining orderly work and storage spaces
  • Maintaining accurate inventory of all equipment assigned to the fabrication shop, cases, and other exhibits resources
  • Assisting with the construction, installation, and deinstallation of temporary and permanent exhibits
  • Assisting with special events setup/breakdown
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


Education:
Post-secondary studies in a related technical field would be an asset

Experience:
Working knowledge of power and hand tools as they relate to basic carpentry techniques, simple mechanical systems, and basic electrical wiring; basic understanding of audio-visual equipment; experience in a museum or exhibit environment would be an asset

Language Requirements:
Fluency in English is required; additional languages (especially French) considered an asset

Other Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Mac and PC hardware and various software

Working Conditions:

This position requires may include standing, walking, and lifting more than 50lbs, as well as time spent working in a noisy fabrication shop.


Eligibility:
