The iRobot company is best known for making the little robotic vacuum cleaners known as the Roomba. The company has introduced other robotic technology designed to mop floors, clean gutters, and swimming pools. Many of the devices are programmable according to the user demands. However, the company recently introduced a robotic lawnmower.

The Terra robot is not unlike the Roomba, as it can be programmed to follow a specific path. The product was first introduced in Germany and will be available in the United States sometime during 2020. The device was created to give home and property owners more time to engage in other activity that was once needed to mow grass. Sit back and relax with a glass of iced tea or a beer while Terra takes care of the lawn.

How Terra Functions
iRobot explains that the little-automated robots are designed to mimic the mowing ability of people. The device travels back and forth in a line to complete the task. Robot owners need to merely adjust the height of the device to cut grass at the desired length.

The incorporated Smart Mapping technology allows users to program the path, which is retained in the robot’s memory. Terra uses wireless technology and follows the path directed by strategically placed beacons. If the internal battery runs down before completing the job, the device simply returns to the base automatically to recharge. Once fully charged, the robotic mows where it left off and finishes.

Terra owners will also be able to link the device with the iRobot Home App via Wi-Fi to determine how often the lawn must be mowed and when. The little robot is also created to withstand inclement weather and tough terrain.

Initially, wireless technology came under scrutiny. Some feared that the robot’s frequency might interfere with other electronic devices using the same frequency. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory was one of the organizations that expressed concerns. Staff members thought sure that Terra might interfere with the destination’s telescopes. However, in 2015, the FCC granted iRobot with the approval the company needed to sell the product. But, they also put restrictions on the technology that involved the height of the beacons, the signal strength. They also determined that the robot must only be used in residential areas.

Justin, Interesting. A former son-in-law is an engineer who brings robotic manufacturing on line for operations like automobile plants.. He described the process for "training" those sophisticated machines as sort of like "walking them through the required actions, recording the process in software and then testing it over and over until it is perfected." I'm just glad I don't have a lawn these days but if I did, I'd bee interested. And so it goes.
