Reporting to the Director of Operations, the
Health and Safety Officer is responsible for supporting risk management objectives at all ANC locations, carrying out inspections of workplaces, and taking necessary action to ensure compliance.

The position is also responsible for assisting in responding to and investigating concerns/complaints from staff and employers and assisting in taking appropriate action and investigating accidents or injuries that occur in the workplace.

Monitoring is provided by Provincial Government Inspectors for the position as well.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver Occupational Health and Safety training programs to staff
  • Implement and maintain a health safety and environmental program
  • Conduct Occupational Health and Safety audits and assessments
  • Enforce federal and provincial Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Develop safe work practices and procedures
  • Advise managers on occupational health and safety regulations and responsibilities
  • Consult with and observes outside contractors regarding renovations to ensure they are in compliance with regulations and safe work practices (i.e. ensure hard hats and boots are worn, fall arrest systems are used and barriers are put in place to control dust)
  • Observe and consult with staff to ensure work is being completed safely and answer questions regarding safe work practices
  • Respond to directives issued by government agencies
  • Attend meetings regarding future work projects and the safety precautions which need to be in place before work starts
  • Maintain a database and record incident and daily log reports including technical reports on facility renovation projects
  • Attend training to keep current regarding safety standards
  • Attend safety meetings to review safe work practices
  • Independently investigate possible safety issues related to renovation projects and determine the necessary course of action to correct the safety issue (i.e. calling in a contractor to remove mould from a ceiling).
  • Able to issue stop work orders if proper safety precautions are not being followed

Qualifications and Experience

  • Specific knowledge on occupational health and safety regulations and legislation
  • A minimum of 2 or 3 year Diploma in Safety Engineering Technology
  • Experience in the field would be considered an asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace

Conditions of Employment

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • Flexible to work outside of standard core hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am 5 pm)
