This OPSEU Local 328 position offers competitive total compensation including hourly wage range of $25.45 to $31.81 _(wage under review)_

ummary

Duties & Responsibilities:


Operational Activities and Maintenance

  • Work as a team to coordinate planting, pruning, chipping, removal and general maintenance of trees, shrubs, and other plant material as required.
  • Ensure safety, structural development and health of trees through the operation of arboriculture equipment and apparatus including but not limited to chain saws, brush chippers and a bucket truck.
  • Inspect municipal trees and conduct condition assessments to determine risk potential and make recommendations for maintenance or monitoring to mitigate accordingly.
  • Assist with maintenance operations within the Town's parks and open spaces.
  • Provide proper clearances above roads, sidewalks, traffics signs, streetlights, and buildings.
  • Assist in ideal planting site determination and required work plans and species selection for installation in various municipal settings; monitor said sites including beyond warranty period(s).
  • Review and report on work orders generated regarding tree care.
  • Manage municipal tree inventory and provide expertise in all aspects of urban forestry and arboriculture including invasive species, pesticide and Bee City programs.
  • Respond to stormdamaged trees and emergency situations.
  • Provide quality and respectful customer service by responding to public inquiries about municipal trees and plant material and communicating concerns to Supervisor.
  • Ensure all municipal equipment and apparatus are kept in a clean, safe state free of litter and debris, and report any unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Perform other general municipal maintenance duties as may be assigned, including winter maintenance activities, in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Minimum two (2) year college diploma in a recognized Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or equivalent.
  • Certification as an Arborist, Utility or Municipal Specialist through the International Society of Arborists (ISA). Utility Specialist, Municipal Specialist, Board-Certified Master Arborist designation, and/or Climber Specialist certification is an asset.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of current work experience in an urban forestry environment completing tree maintenance, pruning and removals aloft and from the ground.
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver's license in good standing is required. A valid DZ Ontario driver's license is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of tree physiology and biology, tree health, common insects & disease, hazard, and applicable federal and provincial legislation.
  • Professional Chainsaw safety and cutting techniques certificate required.
  • Aerial Bucket Recue and Fall Arrest training, Working at Heights training, and Aerial Tree Rescue training, or MOE recognized Exterminator License are an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or training in CPR, First Aid and WHMIS are an asset.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Conscientious, with attitude in manner to serve and support the public.
  • Approved safety boots and PPE must be worn at all times.

Effort/Physical Demands:


  • Physical demand requires potentially long periods of standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, or lifting.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.
