Major Purpose

The Jack Layton Fellow (Summer Student) - Sustainable Working Group will maintain the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism and exercise good judgment including the ability to escalate to management when help is required and being able to meet deadlines as set out by their direct manager within a fast-paced corporate environment.


Key Responsibilities
Working closely with FCM's Sustainability Working Group (SWG), a summer fellow would lead on the following tasks:


Sustainability Working Group (80%):


Waste Reduction

  • Work with Facilities and other internal stakeholders on the implementation of a zerowaste policy for FCM, including the elimination of single use plastic.
  • Research and summarize current best practices for office building waste management and sharing improvement opportunities.

Staff Engagement on Corporate Climate Strategy

  • Work with the Consultant developing the Corporate Climate Strategy to engage staff across FCM to identify and test perspectives on opportunities for staff action.
  • Working with GMF's Engagement Research Analyst, develop and launch a staff survey and synthesize results.
  • Work with our Consultant to develop information and engagement sessions for employees.

Procurement

  • Research best practices for sustainable certifications and procurement policies
  • Identify gaps in existing sustainable procurement policies, developing briefing memos for any areas for improvement

Reporting

  • Conduct and report on the corporate GHG inventory for 2023 calendar year using the SoFi online inventory tool.
  • Identify examples of "bestinclass" Corporate Climate Reports from organizations similar to FCM identify the key gaps in FCM policies, processes, and/or data that could enable FCM in developing a similar report.
  • Present to the Sustainability Working Group on progress and support presentations to Management Committee.
  • Create a final report summarizing activities and recommendations to be presented to all staff.
  • Help create a comprehensive report outlining our accomplishments during the Charter period.

Carbon Offsets

  • Working with FCM's carbon offset supplier to track and allocate our offsets to the best Canadian projects.
  • Updating and maintaining FCM's carbon offset registry.

Secondary component (20%); Jack Layton Fellowship Project:

  • Work collaboratively within a team of 7 fellows selected from various FCM departments.
  • Continue the development of a campaign to commemorate Jack Layton's work. This campaign will focus on youth engagement in local communities with an emphasis on participation in municipal issues.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environment studies, urban planning, engineering, or related fields;
  • Working towards a Master's degree in environmental science, environmental studies, urban planning, engineering, or related fields.

Skills/Qualifications/Experience:


  • Experience with organizational sustainability initiatives, in either a leadership or participant role;
  • Experience with GHG software and conducting organizational GHG inventories;
  • Strong research and analytical s
