    Our Lightspeed System Engineering team defines the performance required of all RF elements in the entire satellite communication system. As a Manager Radio System Engineering, you will lead all technical aspects of the radio system architecture of the Telesat Lightspeed systems in terms of air interface definition, concept of operations, functional descriptions and physical implementation of the RF functions. In particular, you will define the functional and performance requirements related to the radio system function as applicable to the satellite payload, user terminals and landing stations.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Bring expert level experience to the existing team in finalizing the definition of all aspects of the radio system implementation involving agile multi-beam phased array antennas using beam hopping.
    • Support the definition concept of operations for all phases of the functional requirements, including user terminal commissioning, network entry, satellite handovers, time synchronization, adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) among others.
    • Serve as principal system architect for the definition of all air interfaces between the user terminals, landing stations and satellite payloads.
    • Review and approve all related requirements in the associated sub systems.
    • Develop strategies for modeling RF link performance accounting for impairments through the difference elements in the system
    • Work with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, User Terminal and Landing Station engineers, to partition functions between hardware and software domains
    • Work with system modeling team to provide guidance on system design assumptions to be taken into account in the system model.
    • Work with system operations team to jointly develop mechanisms and constraints for resources assignment, and algorithms such as band width on demand management.
    • Develop strategies for modeling link performance accounting for impairments the difference elements in the system.
    • Work with the network team to ensure a seamless functional interface between the network functions and the radio system.
    • Collaborate with the Verification and Test group to plan proper validation of the requirements to ensure appropriate system performance.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    • B. Sc. in Electrical, Computer or System Engineering and a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in satellite communications.
    • Good experience in system design, requirement management and communication systems performance assessments
    • Expert in implementation of air interfaces, modem technologies, modulation and coding and its impact on the satellite link performance
    • Deep knowledge of DVB standards such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2 standard
    • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline or preferably Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering with emphasis in RF/microwave circuits or communication theory
    • Knowledge of digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single and multi-carrier techniques, modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM
    • Specific experience with modulation standard such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2, as well as with Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) methods
    • Good understanding of Experience in MATLAB or other tools for modeling and analyzing RF communication systems
    • Experience performing analysis and simulation of communication systems.
    • Thorough understanding of RF passive and active components
    • Good understanding of active antenna beam forming technologies including digital beam forming, and fast beam hopping
    • Experience characterizing radio performance at microwave frequencies, including rain fade and its effects on the communication links.
    • Knowledge of RF transceiver architectures and digital communication theory
    • Highly collaborative team-player who can quickly earn the confidence of co-workers and teammates.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management, engineering teams and partners / suppliers.
    • Experience with business considerations and practical limitations related to system design and implementation.
    • Ability to prioritize opportunities, needs and resources.
    • Fluent in English, written and oral.

    DECISION MAKING & SUPERVISION:

    • In this role, the incumbent will provide leadership and make important technical.
    • recommendations on the implementation of the Lightspeed System design
    • This role will expand during the course of the program to an organization between 3 to 6 engineering staff
