JIAS Toronto is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to helping immigrants with resettlement in the Greater Toronto Area. JIAS Toronto assists lawfully admitted immigrants and refugees in meeting basic financial, social, legal, and other requirements of immigration.

We work to advance the well-being and social integration of newcomers by providing a full range of outreach, support, counseling, training, and referral resources.


JIAS Toronto is currently seeking a
Refugee Application Support Student to assist with research, writing, and communication with clients and their families.

This full-time position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and require the incumbent to be between the ages of 18 to 30 years of age and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.


This position will pay up to $20 per hour; the contracts will be for a total 420 hours.**
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interview with clients partaking in sponsorship program
  • Have ongoing communication with all parties to the sponsorship using different communication methods, based on the accessibility of the refugees abroad
  • Analyze and verifying the accuracy of the data collected
  • Perform program and countrycondition research as required
  • Provide weekly updates and progress reports to supervisor and program director
  • Participate in small group and fullstaff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned or required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Post-Secondary degree/diploma in Law, Paralegal, Refugee Support, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Experience in reaching and interpreting provincial and federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures will be an asset

Cultural Sensitivity Skills:

through the various tasks involved in the gathering of personal data, the summer staff will be exposed to different methods of communication, as well as to clients, family members and individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

This position will have the opportunity to learn the methods that work best in different life situations, and about various cultures and values.

In addition, the position will utilize tools that can significantly improve their writing skills

  • Workplace Culture Skills: This position will develop workplace communications skills, as it will be involved in ongoing communication amongst all staff members. In addition, it will provide weekly updates and progress reports to the supervisor and program director and will participate in small group, and full staff meetings
  • Digital Skills: The summer student will have the opportunity to be trained and take on navigating the federal government websites and access the required government forms for completion.
  • Fluency in languages that relate to the Agency client base will be considered an asset such as Hebrew, Russian, Arabic, Tigrinya, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, etc.
