As a member of the JIAS Toronto LINC team, the

Supply LINC Instructor plans, prepares and delivers English language classes to adult newcomer learners. This is a unionized position.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Supervised by the Language and Settlement Director, the LINC Instructor plans, prepares, and delivers English language classes to adult newcomer learners.
  • Follows and adapts the most recent LINC curriculum to meet the students' needs. Administers a student needs assessment and develops the curriculum based on those needs.
  • Plans, prepares, and administers clientcentered/learnerbased lessons taking into account the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) and in accordance with funders' directives while also considering students' needs and interests.
  • Has full knowledge and understanding and employs the principles of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment when planning and delivering lessons, as well as for student assessment and promotion.
  • Ensures class time is maximized.
  • Is punctual and prepared for class with all the necessary teaching materials. Records students' attendance daily and regularly reports attendance to the office.
  • Performs regular, ongoing assessment of students' progress, records it and reports it to the office on a regular basis for HARTs proficiency input.
  • Ensures there is a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom. Promotes and sets an example of mutual respect.
  • Helps students gain awareness of the various aspects of Canadian culture and lifestyle through presentations, workshops, and special events/activities.
  • Participates in professional devolvement opportunities, staff meetings and special projects as required.
  • Is aware of signs of abuse and reports them to the Language and Settlement Director and proper authorities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Experience as an English language teacher/instructor. Experience in the settlement sector an asset.
  • Has TESL Ontario certification (or is grandfathered with TESL equivalent from a certified Canadian University).
  • Has working knowledge on PBLA Guidelines, implementation, and practice.
