Overview


The Research and Analysis Department (RAD) is looking for a research assistant (8-month contract) to join EDC Economics' team of economists, political risk and financial analysts.

RAD's role is to provide reliable, relevant and timely analysis on forward-looking issues for current and prospective Canadian traders and investors as well as EDC executives.


We do this by:

  • Preparing internal and external analysis, reports, presentations, briefings, blogs and data visualizations on a variety of international trade and investment issues
  • Producing briefings and longerterm analysis that informs senior management's decisionmaking and corporate strategy
  • Collaborating in our research with other government departments, universities and think tanks
Our workplan is currently focused on the following themes:

  • Understanding the impact of the global pandemic and recent geopolitical developments on Canada's medium-term trade performance
  • Studying structural trends in global trade and Canada's longerrun performance relative to other advanced economies
  • Identifying opportunities to increase Canada's participation and success in international markets and promoting "sectors of the future" (e.g., digital trade, clean tech, agrifood, cultural exports)
  • Estimating unrealized trade potential, including in traditionally underrepresented groups of: small and mediumsized enterprises; women, Indigenous, and immigrantentrepreneurs.
  • Monitoring the developments of Canada's trade policy and preferential trade agreements
  • The future energy sector and implications of the transition to netzero policies for international trade

Responsibilities

  • Reporting directly to the Director of RAD, the research assistant will be involved in the delivering on the team's priorities. This includes _
  • Assisting the work of other analysts in the Economics department as well as individually contributing research and analysis
- _Ad hoc_ briefings and analysis to support the Office of the Chief Economist

  • Collect, synthesize, and verify data and background information to support various ongoing projects
  • Develop databases, tools and contribute to presentation preparation
  • Support the development of EDC Economics' internal and external publications by researching macroeconomic trends and conducting data analysis.
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree in Economics, International Affairs, International Politics, Business Administration, Public Policy or Finance, with an expected completion date of May-June 202
  • Knowledge of basic economic principles and statistical methods
  • Keen interest in international economics, trade and trade policy, and the Canadian and global economies
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to distill complex information into wellarticulated findings
  • Ability to work in a team environment and quickly absorb new material
  • Highly developed analytical, and research skills
  • Advanced Excel skills with proficiency in PowerPoint
  • Ability to manage time and work on multiple concurrent projects
  • Positive attitude, selfstarter, desire to learn and grow your skillset
