Under the direction of the school principal, the Interpreter is responsible for:

  • providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students;
- facilitates communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system;
- offers tutoring and/or note taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary;
- participates in team meetings and assists the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness;
- and performs other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor.


Required Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Secondary school diploma;
- a three year Community college diploma in sign language interpreting;

  • 1.5 years of related experience;
- excellent communication skills;
- the ability to establish a rapport and work with individuals on a one-to-one basis;
- initiative and commitment;
- and the ability to work as a team member.

  • Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Being Fully Vaccinated with a COVID19 Vaccine or participating in mandatory regular rapid antigen testing is a condition of employment in the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

In addition, the following will be considered an asset:

  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) and the Ontario Interpreter Services (O.I.S.);
- and NVCI, CPR and First Aid.

  • At the completion of a successful interview, you will be required to provide an Original Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector dated within the last 6 months.
