Job Description Summary


The Audio Visual Technician provides varied and complex technical service support in the use of AV resources and systems to meet user requirements.


The AV Technician provides over the phone, online and/or on-site technical support to faculty, staff, students and outside users for the provision and operation of audio-visual equipment, facilities and services in support of academic courses and other communication needs utilized in physical spaces at UBC as well as Flexible Learning initiatives.

This position manages regular and preventative maintenance of specialized AV equipment and AV related IT systems, such as classroom computers, video conference, lecture capture and webinar systems, iClicker student response systems; and also demonstrates the operation of this equipment to any users as required.

This position also manages the AV portion for special events.


The AV Technician independently responds to incidents and requests in a timely manner, troubleshoots equipment and systems problems, and provides solutions and/or work-arounds to accommodate the user s immediate needs, documents and follows up on all incidents and requests, as well as escalates incidents and requests when required.

The AV Technician will also coordinate or manage other AV functions as required, such as system integration & implementation, system documentation, system and product remove & replace for repair, room scheduling and bookings, digital signage setup, related shipping and receiving, scheduling and booking of rental equipment and services.


The AV Technician supports and assists with providing lecture and event media recording, webcasting services and post media production services for the UBC community and its stakeholders.

Helps in the development of event recording and webcast digital media content.


This position works a fixed schedule but requires flexibility as some work must be performed outside of regular business operating hours.

The AV Technician may also be required to act in an on-call capacity in extenuating circumstances. This position may occasionally be required to travel for off-campus events.

Organizational Status

This position reports directly to either the AV Support Team Lead or AV Support Manager. This position will be responsible for overseeing the work of one or more students assigned to their zone.

Work Performed

  • Provides maintenance, troubleshooting, instruction and/or support on the use of AV systems and equipment including but not limited to video conferencing, webinar, and lecture capture, as required by each ticket. Tickets include emergency incidents.
  • Responds to incidents and requests in a timely manner and provide solutions and/or a workaround to accommodate the user s immediate needs
  • Documents and followup on all incidents and requests, as well as managing the escalations of incidents and requests when required to ensure issue resolution.
  • Manages all AV equipment and services in each of their assigned zones, including but not limited to dedicated learning spaces, lecture theatres and classrooms. Proactively identifies and resolves preventative maintenance issues, including troubleshooting and repairing systems and peripheral equipment, deploying new hardware, software and security updates, inventory check of supplies, equipment, warranties and maintenance agreements, and condition and operation check of AV equipment.
  • Maintains service records on each piece of equipment and accurate work record file statistics.
  • Orders and replaces equipment and hardware as necessary. Performs onsite repairs/maintenance on various audiovisual equipment including but not limited to multimedia projectors, control systems and digital system switching.
  • Provides maintenance and support for dedicated classroom PCs that are used by instructors and other users.
  • Ensures that all necessary software is installed and network connections are functioning properly.
  • Provides maintenance and support of the Fusion system software for each connected room to manage remote monitoring and control of these rooms.
  • Assists faculty, staff, students and other users in the planning and preparation of webinars, video conferencing, and video capture sessions. Ensures all necessary AV equipment (such as camera, codecs, recording and streaming devices) are delivered, set up, properly configured, and tested for the session. If required, provides basic AV production editing.
