    Job Summary
    This position will use biophysical techniques to research drug-delivery vehicles for oligonucleotide therapeutics, such as mRNA vaccines and medicines. The work will focus on applying CLiC single-molecule imaging technology to simultaneously measure the size and mRNA cargo loading of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). Techniques employed will include new biophysical and measurement capabilities, as well as biotechnology, wet lab and molecular biology techniques.
    Organizational Status
    Reports to the Principle Investigator. Communicates regularly with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, collaborators within the Nanomedicine Innovation Network (NMIN) and industry partners including ScopeSys Inc.
    Work Performed

    • Conducts diverse lab work such as bench level pipetting, lipid nanoparticle and DNA/RNA/protein preparation, and specialized microscopy experiments using single-molecule CLiC methodology
    • Assists with designing and conducting experiments as part of the lab's larger research projects. This could include assisting with; the design and structural analysis of DNA/RNA oligomers; fluorescence labeling; Biophysical assays; micro -fabrication and lithography; lipid and micelle interactions with oligonucleotides; and surface chemistry and passivation treatments
    • Assists with analyzing and interpreting experiment results and troubleshoots problems as needed.
    • Searches, reviews and interprets research literature
    • Documents and communicates experimental plans and results in different formats and timescales, from weekly research meetings to contributing to grant reports and publications
    • Assists the lab manager in performing tasks such as lab organization, purchasing supplies and procurement of small equipment
    • Maintains a clean and orderly working environment in the lab
    • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

    Consequence of Error/Judgement
    Attention to detail and exercising judgement is required. The Technician will be responsible for reporting errors or problems in their work in a timely manner, and participate in a resolution to correct those errors. Improperly conducted procedures may warrant the repetition of experiments affecting the timeline of the research project and wasting of resources.
    Supervision Received
    Reports directly to the Principle Investigator to ensure priorities are addressed. Works under general supervision, carries out day-to-day tasks in collaboration with one or two Ph.D. scientists and close guidance from the Principle Investigator in weekly meetings. Will receive specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established procedures.
    Supervision Given
    The Technician will work as part of a team. May have joint responsibility for supervising and training more junior personnel.
    Minimum Qualifications
    High school graduation. Preference will be given to candidates holding a Bachelor degree in the field of biophysics, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, physics, chemistry or biochemistry. Minimum of 2 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in biophysics, engineering, surface science and chemistry, data analysis, coding, molecular biology, microscopy, biochemistry, electronics. Computer experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as GitHub, Basecamp, Slack, Jira, and other project management and communication tools.
