Description

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This 31-month project will develop and put in place a prevention and care cascade framework to support racialized immigrant, refugee and non-status women, trans and nonbinary people impacted by, or at risk of experiencing gender-based violence (GBV) in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

It will address the different risks and socio-cultural factors experienced by racialized women, and address the need for culturally appropriate and safe services.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Pilot the GBV cascade intervention that will strengthen linkage to care for survivors and women at risk.
a.

Provide primary prevention activities through community education and engagement:

i. Support peers in the delivery of 'kitchen table talks' in community spaces to engage racialized women in an informal way

ii.

Deliver peer-co-facilitated self-efficacy and self-empowerment development workshops that incorporate silence and shame reduction interventions and challenge traditional norms around GBV.

b.

Support the development of a risk-assessment tool through the WHIWH Flourish website to complement the WITHWomen IPV screening tool developed by Dr.

Patricia O'Campo from MAP Centre of Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael's Hospital.

The tool will identify women 16 years and older at high risk or already experiencing GBV and link them to care through self-referral to the case manager.

c. Launch a holistic woman-centred approach to care and linkage to support services for women 16 years and older. Women will enter this program through self-referral or referral from service providers.

i. Provide one-on-one client support, case management and counselling.

ii. Complete safety planning for the women and their children where necessary.

iii. Provide advocacy and referrals to identified community services (i.e., legal, housing, financial, shelters, emergency housing, counselling).

iv.

Establish and provide the necessary continuum of support to assist women in setting goals, recognizing safe options and making positive choices.

  • Support ongoing evaluation of the pilot testing of the care cascade to measure the process, feasibility, satisfaction and impact.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university or equivalent certification in a recognized social service worker program.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in a community setting.
  • Proficiency in current assessment, counselling, case management and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Indepth understanding of available GBV community support resources and services.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups.
  • Proficiency in language(s) other than English spoken within our priority populations is an asset.
