Description

What happens to arts programming when there is a drastic political shift from a democratic system to a totalitarian regime that enforces a rigid, anti-democratic ideology? This question provides the overarching framework for this exciting project in the digital humanities.

The Nazi regime affected arts programming, such as opera, by the suppression of repertoire that conflicted with its totalitarian ideology.

I am making these programming shifts transparent by building a dataset that will be integrated with international cultural heritage data.

Quantifying repertoire shifts will provide the evidence to objectively answer quantitative and qualitative questions.

For this purpose, I am building a MS Excel database to track opera programming on German-speaking stages in the 1930s and 1940s.

In collaboration with Open Linked Data experts at the University of Guelph, I will then link this data with cultural heritage data networks.
