ACSA Newcomer and Settlement Department is looking to hire a skilled individual with experience in working with newcomers particularly newcomer Youth.

The
SETTLEMENT COUNSELOR - YOUTH position will work with a team of Settlement Counselors to help newcomers, immigrants and refugees in their settlement process especially the newcomer Youth particularly connecting them to various resources to address their basic needs such as food, housing, education, etc.

The applicant must demonstrate experience in project coordination, case management, counseling, virtual training, information and referral and crisis management. This position will lead the Youth Summer Program between May to August and other youth related activities thereafter. The position also requires the staff to provide in-person services. It is also preferable for the staff to speak another language other than English.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide a spectrum of settlement services to marginalized and vulnerable newcomers especially with newcomer youth;
  • Responsible for related administration, systems and organization to support work, including maintaining uptodate knowledge of social service programs linking to first language and settlement community groups; maintaining client files, program statistics and compliance with privacy legislation;
  • Offer assistance in employmentrelated services, including referrals to employment services, employment supports, and other resources;
  • Conduct initial intake and assessments, as well as ongoing supportive counseling to ensure that clients receive the services they need;
  • Develop and deliver engaging and informative information sessions and workshops for newcomer youth on a variety of topics such as postsecondary education, OSAP, youth employment, bullying, and selfesteem; etc.
  • Collaborate with school principals, guidance counselors, school staff, library staff, and other referral sources to better integrate newcomer students into their new communities;
  • Work closely with other stakeholders/agencies to develop a Youth Leadership program/training for newcomer youth;
  • Lead the Youth Summer Program activities between May to August;
  • Network with mainstream and ethnospecific agencies to ensure that clients have access to the resources and services they need;
  • Maintain confidential client files and provide interpretation services and assistance with filling out forms as needed;
  • Monitor participant progress, develop action plans, and provide followup planning and support;
  • Enter client information in the database in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Prepare highquality case management reports and other reports required by the Project;
  • Assist with all settlementrelated issues as needed;
  • Organize and participate in community events and outreach efforts to support and engage newcomer communities;
  • Participate in monthly ACSA staff meetings, program meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities;
  • Adhere to legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts, as well as the policies of ACSA;
  • Protect the health and safety of self and others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and following all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate outreach, workshops, and settlement services;

Qualifications/ Skills Required:_

  • Postsecondary education in Social Work, Social Service Work, Child & Youth Program;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the experiences, issues and needs of newcomer youth;
  • 2 or more years of relevant experience in coordinating youth program and delivering supportive counseling for youth;
  • Demonstrated relationships with schools, public libraries, & other youthoriented agencies serving newcomer youth for outreach and networking activities;
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution techniques & mediation;
  • Ability to relate to, communicate with and motivate youth, their families and agency/library/school staff;
  • Experience facilitating workshops with a natural flair for public speaking, providing clear and accurate information to newcomer audience;
  • Superior communication skills, oral and written in English;
  • Strong leadership skills: integrity, ability to build trust of others; ability to deliver results;
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, planning, organizational and time management skills;
