Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi-service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities. Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years' programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.


The Youth Supporting Youth (YSY) pilot is a peer support program that will support marginalized and vulnerable youth, including those at risk of or involved with gang violence.

This project is a part of York Region's Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which is a long-term tool to enhance safety and well-being through proactive, targeted and community-driven actions.


Summary of Job Functions

The Coordinator - Youth Supporting Youth will lead the project team, the Region of York, partnering agencies, relevant systems, and other youth serving/community agencies to coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of the YSY pilot. Liaising with partners, the coordinator will identify and work with youth living in the target areas of Northern Georgina, Central Newmarket, South-Central Markham; and South-Central Richmond Hill (including the City of Vaughan) between the ages of 12-26, with lived experience of community violence exposure and other intersecting vulnerabilities; and ensure that conducted activities are aligned with project work plan and York Region's Community Safety & Well-Being Plan. The YSY Project Coordinator also ensures that logistics and conversations surrounding project activities are soundly assessed and implemented.

Duties include:

Responsible for overall project planning, implementation and evaluation

  • Oversee and develop an annualized work plan which incorporates community workshops, give back events, community engagement events
  • Supervise project facilitator and other relevant project staff; and facilitate team meetings and professional development opportunities for the team
  • Develop/revise project curriculum and conduct trainings with staff team
  • Work closely with the Region and partner organizations in program development, implementation and evaluation to ensure project activities are in line with goals of the project
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with local community leaders and partner agencies
  • Develop and plan engagement opportunities for communities and youth vulnerable to serious violence and crime around safety, mental health, and/or healing
  • Coordinate administrative workshop/community logistics (space, permits, etc.), petty cash, honoraria distribution, invoicing, etc.
  • Connect with youth participants regarding emerging issues, conflict, risks
  • Establish safety protocols in responding to any/all incidents that may arise
  • Facilitate intake and case referrals (triage) for youth program participants
  • Develop, implement and oversee communication strategies and outreach execution for project
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and training as required
  • Develop and implement project evaluation with team
  • Occasional weekend, and regular evening hours as required
  • Produce reports for the funder and community stakeholders
  • Participate as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the agency
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protect own health and the health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately; and follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Qualifications:


  • Diploma or Degree in a related field (Child/Youth Work, Social Work, Community Development, etc.) or 4 years equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth and young adults, families, community partners, staff, etc.
  • Experience providing holistic supports to youth vulnerable to serious violence and crime
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of programs and services available to youth and young adults in the Region of York
  • Demonstrated administration/organizational skills, including but not limited to program logistics, work plan development, reporting, case notes, petty case management, etc.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and crisis management skills
  • Ability to plan and facilitate youth friendly curriculum
  • Experience outreaching and engaging with commun
