Background
ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities.
Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years' programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.
The Youth Supporting Youth (YSY) pilot is a peer support program that will reinforce the capacity building and opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable youth, including those at risk or involved with gang violence.
The project is a part of York Region's Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which is a long-term tool to enhance safety and well-being through proactive, targeted and community-driven actions.
Summary of Job Functions
We are seeking a dynamic, community oriented and administratively-savvy individual to assist the work and initiatives of the Youth Supporting Youth project.
The YSY Project Assistant will report to the YSY Project Coordinator, supporting the administration, outreach and communication of the YSY Project to the youth and local neighbourhoods of Northern Georgina, Central Newmarket, South-Central Markham, and South-Central Richmond Hill (including the City of Vaughan).
The YSY Project Assistant will be present in each of the communities on a weekly basis to support and mentor Peer Mentors and Community Ambassadors, for the onboarding and training of Community Healers, and for the facilitation of workshops.
Duties include:
- Assist the YSY Project Coordinator in the development an outreach and engagement plan; then lead the implementation of the outreach and engagement plan in each of the four areas
- Schedule and coordinate initiatives and events with local residents and youth support workers to promote the Youth Supporting Youth program
- Build and implement resources, communications and tools needed for community outreach and engagement (I.e. Visuals, language, slide decks, infographics, charts, presentations, etc.)
- Build and implement resources, communications and tools need for community feedback and evaluation (I.e. surveys, community boards, etc.)
- Create and manage the database of engagement at meetings and events
- Provide inperson oversight, mentorship, and communications with Community Ambassadors and Peer Mentors in the various York Region neighbourhoods
- Prepare for and lead workshop and initiative logistics (I.e. venue booking, room set up and tear down, food and refreshments, travel, signage, etc.) as well as the related budget pieces
- Provide inperson and online training and facilitation for Peer Mentors and Community Healers
- Support the Project Coordinator in facilitating ongoing conversations with leaders and stakeholders to uncover prospective opportunities
- Support the acquisition of materials and resources for trainings, initiatives, events, and engagements
- Comfortably practice strong administrative skills to track metrics, budgets, communicate and complete necessary data collection, management and reporting for this portion of the Youth Supporting Youth project
Qualifications:
- 1 to 2 years' experience and/or education in Community Development, Social Services, Youth Justice or related field
- Knowledge of and experience related to York Region, (preferably Markham, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Vaughan or Georgina)
- 1 to 2 years of administrative experience
- 1 to 2 years mentoring and leading teams
- Strong financial skills (I.e. budgeting, tracking, reporting)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, One Drive, Teams) and Adobe Suite
- Facilitation of presentations, workshops, capacity building sessions and meetings
- Ability to work in a fastpaced environment and adapt quickly to the evolving needs of the community and project
- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
- Available to work evenings and weekends
- Second language is an Asset (particularly Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil)
- Mandatory access to vehicle and valid Gclass license
- Clean Vulnerable Sector Screening Check
