Description

Editor, Appetite (18-month parental leave contract)

As a team of dedicated book-loving professionals, we discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe, ensuring that new and established voices are heard.

  • We are actively seeking to add team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We respect and value each individual and are committed to creating a more diverse team and establishing a culture of belonging. If you identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply._

We're looking for an experienced cookbook editor with a passion for food and beautiful books to join the team at Appetite, the award-winning food and lifestyle imprint of Penguin Random House Canada.

Are you passionate about creating beautiful books? Do you love all things food? Are you a self-starter with a willingness to ask questions and learn new skills? Do you have exceptional attention to detail? Are you creative with a strong sense of aesthetics? If this describes you, consider joining us on an exciting journey as we write new chapters of Penguin Random House Canada's story together.

Your contribution to the story:

At Appetite, we publish a wide range of food and lifestyle titles that engage and connect with a variety of readers.

Reporting to the Editorial Director, this is a key role within the editorial team.

As part of our small team, you will assess proposals, acquire, and edit your own projects, and liaise with other departments to bring Appetite's books to the widest possible readership, both domestically and internationally.

We are incredibly passionate about what we do, and we hope you are, too

What you'll do:

  • Build trusted relationships with authors and work with them to shape projects and refine editorial content, completing developmental, substantive, line, and recipe edits for a wide range of cookbooks.
  • Prepare manuscripts for copyedit, then review copyedits and resolve all queries with the author. Prepare manuscripts for typesetting (e.g. tagging photography, preparing page layout thumbnails).
  • Collaborate with authors, photographers and illustrators to bring the aesthetic vision of the book to life— from initiating the earliest creative conversations to approving final layouts—working alongside the production and design team to develop interior page layouts as well as cover designs.
  • Write book cover and Title Information (TI) copy. Copyedit and proofread cover and TI copy (your own, and for other editors within the group).
  • Contribute to the Appetite acquisitions process by reading and evaluating submissions, as well as brainstorming and developing your own original projects. Write offer letters and negotiate offers and contract issues as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between authors and various inhouse departments including marketing and publicity, sales, design, etc., present titles at internal launch meetings, and act as the inhouse champion for the book during all stages of the publishing process.

Experience and knowledge you'll bring (qualifications):

  • A keen understanding of the cookbook market in Canada, across the border in the US, and into the global market.
  • A flexible, creative and entrepreneurial approach to your work, and a proactive and efficient approach to problemsolving.
  • Strong relationship management skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively or independently with mínimal supervision.
  • An extremely organized and detailoriented approach to project management, and the ability to meet deadlines and keep multiple projects on track at the same time.
  • Stellar written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to firstrate author care.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Outlook.
  • A love of all things food

We are open to remote applicants, however; preference will be given to those who are within commuting distance of one of our corporate offices located in Vancouver and Toronto.
