Background


Scarborough Civic Action Network (SCAN) is a community-driven network focused on mobilizing a civic voice for Scarborough, one that is inclusive of marginalized and underrepresented communities and reflective of the diversity of community members who live in Scarborough.

SCAN aims to support civic engagement to address priority equity issues throughout Scarborough. SCAN is governed by its Stewardship Group made up of community-serving agencies and Scarborough residents.


SCAN is trusteed by Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA), a non-profit, multi-service agency addressing the needs and empowering underserved communities in Scarborough to build a better tomorrow.


SCAN is seeking to hire a Community Services Worker support community civic engagement in neighbourhoods across Scarborough and enlist community members.


Summary of Job Functions
We are seeking dynamic individual(s) to support the Scarborough community and residents.

SCAN is looking for someone who is motivated, eager to learn, takes initiative, is reliable, builds relationships with communities and has a passion for civic engagement in Scarborough.

The Community Services Worker will work closely with the SCAN Coordinator to make connections with residents and stakeholders to better connect Scarborough communities to information, resources and opportunities around Scarborough's priority issues - affordable housing, community safety, and public transit.


Duties include

  • Support community education about housingrelated services through inperson and online workshops and other tools based on the community survey outcomes for low to moderate income tenants in Scarborough
  • Assist with development and implementation of effective community outreach strategies and support building connections with diverse communities and stakeholders throughout Scarborough in order to conduct education workshops and share information about housingrelated services
  • Through outreach efforts, collect and share information about housingrelated services offered and upcoming events by community organizations to low to moderate income tenants in Scarborough and through social media, enewsletters, surveys, etc.
  • Through outreach efforts, collect information about community safety and public transit related services and events and share during outreach and to be disseminated for social media, enewsletters, surveys, etc.
  • Support the development of social media content around affordable housing and other priority issues, with content including initiatives/activities, resources, and general information sharing
  • Add to an existing database of social media content and posts for SCAN's ongoing use
  • Protect own health and the health of others by adopting safe work practices inoffice and in the community, and reporting unsafe conditions immediately; follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Other duties as identified by ACSA and SCAN that support the overarching project work to move forward

Qualifications

  • Youth between the ages of 1529 years old
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and legally entitled to work in Canada; and must have one of the following status: Canadian citizenship, permanent resident, Convention refugee, or protected person;
  • Experience and or education in Community Development, Social Services or related fields
  • Knowledge and experience in volunteering or working with both agencies and members of the Scarborough community, and familiarity with the priorities of affordable housing and community safety
  • Working knowledge of good community engagement practices and best practices for civic engagement in Scarborough
  • Familiarity with computer and digital skills (I.e. Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, Social Media platforms, etc.)
  • Familiarity with facilitation of presentations, workshops, capacity building sessions and meetings, and able to transcribe conversations and notes
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced environment and quickly adapt to the evolving needs of the diverse community and project
  • Ability to work both independently with mínimal supervision and collaboratively in team environments
  • Ability to translate spoken and written English to Tamil, Arabic, Chinese, Bengali, Urdu, Farsi, Tagalog or Gujarati an asset
  • Must provide an uptodate vulnerable sector check
