Work Description

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for supporting the Controller in the day-to-day and month/year-end accounting activities, as well as in various improvement initiatives, and financial projects within Taggart Construction.

The Accounting Manager will act as a key resource and managerial backup to the various positions on the team, leading the accounts' payable function, equipment accounting, project accounting and reviewing the monthly financial statements.

The performance of duties requires an ability to manage priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet filing deadlines.


Major Responsibilities:


Accounting Manager:


  • Support the Controller in managing the daytoday accounting activities of the business. This includes reviewing work prepared by staff, such as monthend recovery, and vendor account reconciliations, and assisting with the resolution of daytoday issues faced by the staff, escalating to the Controller or others as appropriate.
  • Daytoday management of six direct reports, including ensuring monthly duties of team members are performed as expected, reviewing as required to ensure timely, complete, and accurate reporting in accordance with policies and deadlines, and providing feedback and coaching to team members.
  • Identify and bring forward ideas for possible improvements in daytoday accounting functions, assisting with implementation when approved by management.
  • Preparation, review, and analysis of financial reports, including cash flow forecasts, deferred revenue/ workinprogress report, and monthly and annual reporting with mínimal input from the Controller.
  • Assist the Controller with the review or preparation and submission of required filings, including HST, subcontractor reporting, and various statements and reports as required.
  • Provide support and participate in regular crosstraining to provide coverage for other positions within the finance team as needed.
  • Create bank transfers and online payments for approval.
  • Preparation of annual T5018 subcontractor reporting.
  • Act as backup when needed for Controller and other managers within the finance team.
  • Support, participate in and review the preparation of yearend audit files and working papers, liaising with the finance team and other stakeholders to ensure deliverables are met in a timely manner.
  • Participate in workforce planning and recruitment activities in conjunction with an internal Human Resources team, in team resource management and in the team performance review process.
  • Assist the Controller with preparing annual budgets and cash flow forecasts for presentation to senior management.
  • All other duties as required.

Statement of Qualifications:


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A minimum of 7 years' relevant work experience, experience in the construction industry and working with projects would be considered an asset.
  • Prior experience with management of direct reports is required.
  • CPA designation, or designation in process is required.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel and Word), and in various financial software. Prior experience in an ERP system is required.
  • Proven ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple tasks, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong ability to analyze and problemsolve.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and a desire to challenge and improve current practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Experience in a multicompany environment is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and approach situations in a diplomatic and professional manner.
  • Prior experience in public accounting an asset

Work Environment:


  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time at workstation.
  • Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • This role may require overtime at certain times of the year.
