Experience

I have been teaching English as a second language for several years, instructing students from various backgrounds, including Arab descent. For over 6 years, I have taught adults, preparing them for work and business, immigration exams, and general conversation, while greatly improving their English level and confidence in speaking. I have also taught in school settings, educating young learners all the way up to older youth in their adolescence.

I am passionate about business, marketing, video design, photography, technology, and science. I have helped business owners scale-up their business and vastly increase sales, helping them with online marketing and using proper English and relevant keywords in their ads. From client outreach to personally networking with clients, I have removed their barrier for communication, giving them the confidence that they need in speaking and being understood. I use various engaging and interactive methods for teaching, such as flash cards, pronunciation exercises, grammar cards, and even using apps for my students to be able to learn on-the-go. I engage my students in speaking and writing activities to give them the practical experience they need before going into the real world, as opposed to memorizing grammar rules. These kinds of activities are what help to retain the language in their minds.

From Sept 2018 to June 2022, I had been acting as a Supply Teacher for Edmonton Public Schools, where I taught various classes in Primary and Secondary. Before this, I completed a one-year contract with Edmonton Islamic Academy as a Grade 1 Teacher. I supported students with phonics, grammar, speaking, reading, and writing, while utilizing games and music. I have also worked at Kisipatnahk School for a year and a half. I taught grade 4 and grades 7-9 Cree youth. During this time, I gained experience that allowed me to deal with various challenges that students faced during their learning, such as behavioral problems, reading deficits, learning gaps, and more. I also administered music classes for KG – Gr. 4, some of which involved teaching Cree syllabics, drama, mathematics, and interactive musical games. During my recent teaching years, I had put together a Reading Buddy Program, where older students helped their young peers in reading 3-4 times a week. This helped the school to tackle low levels in literacy, and gave older students a sense of responsibility. For extracurricular activities, I helped coach the junior high boys’ basketball team, while creating a cooking class and audio production course for older students. I also organized a Spell-A-Thon event for Grades 1 – 6, as a school-wide contest for students to be a part of. I make learning fun and enjoyable, as opposed to dull and boring.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in my passion for outdoor learning, physical activity, interactive games, music, nature, art, technology, and community. It is important that I meet students at their level, relate to them, and find ways to engage them. I have encountered much differentiation during my teaching experiences. I found various ways to motivate students, while gearing them towards working independently, as well as in group settings. I celebrate the language, culture, and diversity of my students. I enjoy incorporating physical activity and games into student learning, and have noticed my students’ enjoyment partaking in this. I believe in learning as a community, and I find ways to help students bond with each other, such as game-oriented learning activities.

I am eager to grow as a teacher practitioner and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my expertise would best meet the needs of your school. I also speak Hindi and Spanish as a second language.
