I am a Technical Writer.
My last work experience was with an amazing company called Boston Scientific. What made this company amazing for me was that it gave me an amazing project and a super role- I was the solo technical writing resource responsible to lead and complete a large-scale documentation update project. The scope of the project was such that it would essentially impact all work instructions for every product its recently acquired company was manufacturing. I took ownership of the project and gave it my best- even training associate tech writers before leaving the company. For the amount of experience I had as a technical writer, I feel very grateful that my potential was recognized by my team lead!
Previous to that, my work experience was with Ericsson. I was a part of the Technical Documentation team and will say I learned a lot about documentation and working in an Agile environment in the IT industry while there.
I landed the job as an intern, trying to finish my diploma in Technical Writing from Algonquin College (one of the best, I tell you!)
Before going back to college, I worked as a Homeroom Teacher for the academic year 2018-2019 at Al-Ameen Elementary, a private school. I taught grade three. I also trained my students for Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). I would say I did a decent job as that year my school was listed as no.1 on the Fraiser’s school ranking report. I managed to win two awards that year, one for dedicated work and another for maintaining open communication with my students' parents. It was a crazy year. It was my first year in Canada as a new immigrant, my first year of re-entering the workforce, my first year teaching kids that age, and my very first year as a working mother of a one-year-old. If you are going to ask me how I got those awards- the truth is I don't know! All I know is that I worked really hard. I was constantly upgrading myself, reading articles on classroom management for 8-10-year-olds to find tips that I could successfully apply. Honestly, I was working what to me felt like 24/7. In the end, I'm guessing all of it paid off.
Aside from this, I have over two years of experience as a Verbal Facilitator. At this company, I was teaching the verbal sections of some of the standardized tests such as the GRE, GMAT, SAT, and ACT. I was also certified to teach IELTS and TOEFL. This was in a company in India named Manya Private Limited- a franchise of The Princeton Review. I gained my first professional experience in this company, and this is just one of the reasons this company is so special to me. Over the course of around two years, I was recognized as an able facilitator and awarded recognition for my work twice. I did a lot of writing there too. Infact, I taught writing for a living.
As you can see, I love instructing, informing, and persuading. So, technical writing was just a natural career progression.
Cumulative, I have over five years of experience writing, out of which two years are in tech writing and the rest in creative writing and related fields.
