About Parker Maceachern:

I'm originally from PEI, moved to Port Alice 4 years ago to continue my aquaculture career. Before moving here I spent 2 years as a mussel farmer and grew up blue fin tuna fishing. Since moving here I've worked for salmon farms, but mainly shellfish farming. But later pivoted to adapt my skills to become a Junior Technician in the natural resource sector. I've attained schooling through NIC(Resource field assistant, Ecosystem stewardship, and BC environmental assessment) NRTG( Backpack Electrofishing, and Fish Habitat Restoration instream techniques), as well as through WCMRC( Costal Spill Response Program, and Shoreline Spill Supervisor training) to help become a more diverse worker. I also have my OFA 1 and Transportation endorsement. My future goal is to become an accredited ABT.

Experience

My experience that I believe would help my become a strong member of your team, would be my aquaculture career. I believe my recent work in the natural resource sector, mainly in forestry but also in biology,  would give me a solid foundation to build my career. While in this role I pride myself on entering/collecting accurate data through various medians, using iPad and GPS units in remote locations and being able to fix issues that may arise with said systems, taking appropriate measurements, and also keeping in contact with our prime contractors to inform them on issues that may arise, and putting data into computers and packaging using ARCmap, and ROADENG programs. I also believe my time on the salmon farms would help me when it comes to any lab work required.

Education

I believe my ecosystem stewardship program through NIC, allowed me to gain skills when it comes to all sampling methods and knowing how to distinguish the numerous site series here in BC. My schooling through NRTG is also of note as I did the Fish habitat restoration instream techniques to get a better understanding of the habitat fish like to congregate in, as well as how to help restore the habitat to what is was before but to also how to stop or reverse the onset of erosion on the stream banks. My backpack electrofishing training I believe would be another big asset as it allowed me to gain knowledge of fry and adult fish in BC.
