Samuel Abarbanel

Recent graduate of a bachelor of Computer Science (CO-OP) with a certificate in Communication Technologies and Cybersecurity at Dalhousie University.

I have been tinkering with computer since a very young age. At age 13 I began using Linux and around the same time learning how to program by completing problems on projecteuler.net. I had been tinkering with computers long before this. Notably, I taught myself about IP-addressing and MAC addresses while researching ways to bypass the network blocks at school - somewhere around the age of 10.

In high school my programming and algorithmic thinking skills had improved a lot. I was programming mostly in Python but some projects required me to learn bits of other languages. I spent a lot of time playing with linux and became more knowledgeable about operating systems and computer hardware as I was setting up new computers all the time to experiment with them. During this time I became very comfortable using terminal environments as I enjoyed the challenge of learning how to do things without a GUI. I became proficient in bash scripting around the age of 17 and my skills using Vim were very sharp by the time I entered university. Additionally, I was experimenting with git since the beginning of high school, so I had a good understanding of software-versioning by the age of 18.
 

At this time I began working for Reeldata Inc in my first year of university (of my own accord) while completing school. This became a CO-OP employment opportunity, where I worked an additional two terms with them as a full-stack software developer for underwater image-capturing devices. I was mostly responsible for writing a software stack to collect images of salmon taken underwater. This software stack enabled the cameras to be deployed remotely and recognized when to take images, and when to upload the data collected to AWS S3 for training a ML keypointing model. During this time I became far more familiar with requirement collection, documentation, planning, and software development. Additionally, this was my first experience working in a team environment on a product requiring multiple teams of specialty. 

During school and my remaining CO-OPs, I learned technologies such as JIRA, Docker, Javascript,  Flask, REST, API's, CSS, and much more. I particularly enjoyed the difficulty of my operating systems classes where I would spend 5-15 hours a week programming in C - I thought it was a lot of fun.  I also enjoyed learning about networking concepts more in-depth and became very interested in penetration testing and cybersecurity near the end of my degree.

I finished my Bachelors of Computer Science as a Sexton Scholar. From here, I am keen to learn anything more in the world of IT / Software / Computing and apply my skills to real-world problems. I believe my tenacity and drive puts me in a natural position to tackle tough problems that need solving - and I am ready to do so. 

Front-of-house bicycle mechanic
Assessed customer's bicycles, explained issues to them.
Completed bicycle check-in reports to track bicycle health and
estimated cost of repairs. Educated customers on best practices for
maintaining their bicycles.

Conducted sales using a POS system. Conducted inventory management
using Lightspeed. Acted as a stand-in mechanic when workload was heavy.

Maintained all company computers, troubleshooting issues when they arose
and updating software to maintain security.
