Communications Advisor

The Communications Advisor provides communications advice and communication plans to support and promote OntarioMD's initiatives, including the realization of set targets.

The role also supports strategies to increase awareness of OntarioMD.

The role works closely with program and project internal clients, develops stakeholder relations outreach plans, key messages and internal communication using a variety of channels including print, digital and social media.


Reporting to the Director, Communications & Marketing, the Communications Advisor is responsible for:

  • Develops and implements integrated communication and rollout plans and tactics to support a portfolio of projects/programs and new business
  • Researches, writes and edits a broad range of editorial content, including the monthly newsletter to clinicians and stakeholders, articles, website content, social media content, brochures, briefing notes, news releases, etc.
  • Drafts and edits communications such as blogs, eblasts, award submissions
  • Develops productive working relationships with internal clients and with external clients, as required
  • Provides communications and marketing advice to client groups
  • Keeps track of program progress and project status by being a part of program and project teams, gathering intelligence upstream to shape downstream advice and products
  • Works with OMD program areas on presentation decks to support OMD speaking engagements
  • Keeps abreast of trends in communications, social media tools, channels, design and strategy
  • Reports any risks or emerging issues affecting the initiatives gathered from the project teams and supports the Director, Communications & Marketing to plan and develop timely and appropriate responses
  • Updates the Director, Communications & Marketing and at Communications & Marketing team meetings on the progress against communications plans
  • Shares responsibility with other members of the Communications and Marketing team for:
  • Social media posts pertaining to product marketing, physician engagement and overall promotion of OntarioMD
  • Submitting ads to OMA and external publications
  • Printing and distribution of collateral for clinicians or Client Service and Engagement teams
  • Contributes metrics for the Communications and Marketing quarterly metrics report
  • Drafts mass communications/eBlasts to promote OntarioMD and its initiatives
  • Understands and complies with Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)
  • Understands and complies with the _Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act_ for all website content
  • Understands and applies OntarioMD's Brand Guidelines and communications protocols and processes
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements that are important to us:

  • Post-secondary education in Communications Marketing, Journalism, Business, or related area or equivalent experience
  • 57 years in a communications role in corporate communications, journalism or public relations environment. Ideally, experience working on multidisciplinary teams, on complex projects.
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communications/presentation skills as well as development of communications plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communications theory, marketing techniques, social media techniques, stakeholder relations, public relations
  • Indepth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios
  • Ability to assess trends and evaluate options and approaches
  • Seasoned interpersonal and negotiation skills to build respectful, productive relationships and to work effectively with a diverse team of professionals
  • Proven research, project management skills and commitment to follow through with tasks to completion
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and an awareness of the political environment
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization and time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to work effectively in a fastpaced, deadline driven environment
  • Basic understanding of the digital health landscape
  • Experience working in the health care and/or technology sectors is preferred
  • Knowledge of working in the public sector or broader public sector is an asset
