Position Summary

Manager, Clinical Genetics

The Manager of Clinical Genetics, is responsible for the coordination and provision of client care in the provision of clinical genetics services.

The Manager collaborates with the Program Director, Medical lead for Genetics, Chief of Pediatrics and Co-Medical Director of MNP, the Molecular Genetics Laboratory Director, the Managers, Cytogenetics and Maternal Serum Screening Laboratories, the Genetics Program staff and all key stakeholders to ensure that high quality, effective and efficient service is provided.

The Manager is responsible for planning, implementation and evaluating all activities and services related to in the Genetics Program and ensuring the are integration with the other services where appropriate.

The Manager also has overall program accountability for Research within the Genetics Program.

This leadership position reports directly to the Program Director, MNP and Clinical Genetics, this position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.


On a practical level, you will

be responsible for:

Leadership and Quality management

  • Maintains a climate conducive to interdisciplinary and collaborative practice and promotes team spirit and cohesiveness.
  • Initiates and leads change effectively within the service.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates goals, objectives, and policies and procedures in alignment with the annual service plan and NYGH strategic plan.
  • Ensures the development and monitoring of performance indicators to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the Program Director, Chief of Pediatrics and Physician Clinical Lead for Genetics, to develop and implement clinical program strategies.
  • Participates in program/Hospital, interagency committees as required.
  • Participate in regional clinical genetics committee as identified through Ontario Health (OH).

Human Resource Management

  • Ensures that staff performance is consistent with the appropriate professional standards of practice and with organizational and Program policy.
  • Ensures human resources align with new teambased model.
  • Develops and maintains a climate conducive to personal and professional growth through leadership, motivation, communication, staff education and conflict resolution.
  • Assists in identifying team and individual's educational needs and facilitates learning opportunities that promote personal and professional development.
  • Facilitates the provision of professional training for genetic councilors, nursing, medical secretaries and genetic counselling students.
  • Supports and facilitates the provision of service for other clinic and northern outreach genetic counselling staff as needed.
  • Ensures effective strategies are utilized in recruitment, selection, retention and performance management of staff.

Financial Management

  • Utilizes effective strategies in operational, research and capital budget planning and allocation to achieve the organizational and Program and Research goals and objectives
  • Plans for the appropriate utilization of allocated resources and monitors efficiency
  • Ensures alignment with OH funding and funding model
  • Ensures proactive planning for incremental volume growth and alignment of funding to appropriate resources and the funding model.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in nursing or genetic counselling.
  • Masters preparation preferred.
  • Two to three years genetic counselling, with health care management or leadership experience.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Effective critical thinking, problem solving and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and coordinate clinical service and research activities
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills that include the ability to communicate appropriately and work collaboratively with all members of the health care team and external providers.
