Position Description:


The Communications Advisor will join the dynamic Communications & Public Affairs team at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), contributing to a range of communications initiatives to promote understanding of research, clinical research and clinical activities at SickKids.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications (Research Institute & Strategic Initiatives), this position requires a strong team player and writer who can quickly learn about a variety of research and health care-related topics and support the development of effective communications tactics and content.


Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Support the Research Institute & Strategic Initiatives and External Communications teams to develop and write internal and external content to highlight research, clinical research and clinical initiatives at SickKids, such as stories and funding announcements, and work with collaborators to create newsletter, web and social media content;
  • Lead Communications & Public Affairs quality assurance and approvals for study recruitment materials as main point of contact for study teams, advising on content and channels to support patient and public participation in clinical research;
  • Support media relations efforts by producing daily media monitoring report, coordinating media requests, editing news releases, obtaining visuals, liaising with relevant partners and creating media lists;
  • Monitor and draft briefing notes on research and health carerelated government announcements and other stakeholder activities;
  • Assist with event planning and supervise inperson photo/video shoots and media events; and
  • Participate in the oncall rotation for Communications & Public Affairs.

Here's What You'll Need

Essential Requirements:


  • Degree/diploma or relevant experience in Communications, Journalism or related areas.
  • One to three years of communications experience.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to plain language complex scientific and medical information.
  • Sound judgment and solid strategic thinking and troubleshooting skills, as well as the ability to carefully manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Strong attention to detail, initiative, professional demeanour and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to balance competing deadlines with organizational and project management skills.
  • Team player who excels at collaborating with others to achieve common goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity.

Assets:


  • Experience in health care, hospital or research environment is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of the media landscape and knowledge of government and the healthcare system is preferred.

Employment Type: 1.0 FTE (35 hours/week for 2-year contract)
