The Opportunity


Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, as Corporate Counsel you will act as a key member of the Leadership team and play a critical role in enabling WAA to deliver against our strategy and mandate for service to the community.

You will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of complex business issues and the potential to make a meaningful and lasting positive impact for those we serve.

You will be responsible for handling a wide variety of complex and specialized legal issues and may be asked to advise on a variety of areas of law, with a focus on corporate, commercial and leasing law.

In partnership with teams across WAA including Real Estate, Air Service Development, Infrastructure, Operations, Finance, Supply Chain and HR you will be responsible for proactively managing risk and creating effective legal solutions while ensuring outstanding levels of customer service both internally and externally.


Responsibilities include:


  • Provide legal and business advice and opinions to organizational leaders on a wide range of legal matters, including weighing multiple inputs and impacts on decisions and courses of action.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with relevant WAA stakeholders and key decision makers in client/tenant organizations, and peers at other airports, to promote good working relationships and an understanding of airport issues.
  • Review documents and contracts, and provide advice on how to minimize risks and maximize legal rights of the WAA and its subsidiaries, including but not limited to leases, revenue agreements, service contracts, and construction contracts.
  • Undertake research, interpret, and analyze information to present opinions, options, and implications to appropriate organizational leaders.
  • Proactively identify, assess, and help manage legal risks affecting different business units.
  • Maintain corporate records of any claims or potential claims and evaluate the impact to the organization.
  • Develop plans to drive improvements to departmental efficiency and customer satisfaction from a legal and corporate services lens.
  • Ensure strong financial management of the department including preparation of the departmental budget and ongoing monthly monitoring of costs.
  • Monitor and advise on changes to laws and regulations, and enforce and otherwise ensure compliance with applicable regulations, legislation, and all other legal obligations of WAA and its subsidiaries.
  • Will be required to be familiar with and act in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement(s) and administer as required.
  • Is required to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, along with other duties as required.

Selection Criteria include:


  • Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor degree (or equivalent).
  • Membership in Canadian Law Society and barred in at least one province, preferably Manitoba.
  • Experience in commercial leasing and general corporate law.
  • Experience in land development is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage a variety of projects simultaneously and balance conflicting priorities in a fastpaced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate legal advice in a clear and practical manner (plain language).
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and desire for continuous learning opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service focused with the ability to develop strong relationships with a variety of internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate sound, pragmatic judgment with the ability to problemsolve and critically analyse situations.
  • Positive attitude and the desire to join a closeknit and supportive team.
  • Ability to motivate others to achieve goals and objectives in a timesensitive environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional or new responsibilities
  • Experience managing or advising in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Exposure to issues related to procurement is an asset.
