    Job Summary

    The Engineer, Process Safety has fundamental chemical manufacturing knowledge to drive safety accountability, best practice programs, processes and systems to achieve performance excellence and regulatory compliance. With a strong technical expertise, responsible for reviewing all new and existing processes, equipment, and plant operations to ensure process safety requirements and controls are identified and addressed in a thorough and rigorous manner.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Responsible for Process Safety Management, including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSHRS) and Enhances / Develops Site Process Safety Management Program and Procedures as required.
    • Leads formal risk assessments / Equipment HazOps / Process Hazard Analyses and Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSHRS) to identify and quantify risk associated with the operation of the facility and processes and supports the development of related control measures.
    • Maintain informed understanding of regulations and process safety standards while providing expert advice and recommendations on the applicability and interpretation of internal and external safety standards for safety and regulatory audits.
    • Act as the company liaison with Government agencies and external associations, concerning environmental and safety issues.
    • Provides technical expertise to all departments to help evaluate risks and cost-effectively resolve process safety issues, including recommendations from Process Hazard Assessments, audits and incident investigations.
    • Systematic hazard analysis of chemical processes and facility operations (e.g. fire, explosion, substance release, overpressure, vacuum, chemical reactions)
    • Provide engineering expertise and leadership in process safety management including campaign readiness, reviewing change management for Master Batch Records for compliance to HazOps, PSHRs and Safe Operations.
    • Establish an effective process safety team responsible for the timely closure of process safety risk gaps.
    • Lead, facilitate and/or participate in root cause investigations on process safety events, develop recommendations to improve the process safety in plant operations and mitigate future incidents.
    • Provide expert technical support to help drive site improvements, including:
      • Review of key safety systems and recommending corrective actions,
      • Support effective identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks and the tracking and completion of risk reduction activities in a timely manner, and
      • Provide technical support (and leadership if called upon) in incident investigations
    • Apply industrial hygiene approaches to monitor and control hazards associated with chemical exposure, noise, lighting, heat, and humidity.
    • Using relevant indicators from Process and Equipment Safety Events, identify trends and develop solutions to mitigate future incidents
    • To keep the Management up-to-date on project schedules.

    Job Requirements

    • Education
      • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or related field
    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Professional Engineering designation with Province of Ontario
      • Working experience with hazard identification, risk analyses and assessment methodologies (e.g. HazOps, PSHRs, etc.)
      • Working knowledge of industry codes, standards and practices relevant to process design and safety (e.g. ASME, TSSA, API, NFPA, ANSI, etc.)
      • Knowledgeable in Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
      • Strong technical writing and organizational skills are required
      • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and make data driven decisions
      • Effective communication, leadership, interpersonal and presentation skills
      • Able to build effective relationships with ALL departments
    • Experience
      • Must have at least 4 years of experience as an engineer in chemical operations and/or process safety engineering or similar experience
