Beacon is hiring a Cook for our brand-new purpose-built low-barrier supportive housing facility for young adult participants aged The Meares building will provide wraparound 24/7 support for 48 participants who are precariously housed or experiencing homelessness.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a brand-new commercial kitchen in a unique position. The Cook will have the autonomy to develop and create menus with the allocated budget.


The goal of Meares is to use a collaborative, strength-based perspective that recognizes the individual skills, talents, and needs of our residents.

In collaboration with community resources, Meares will provide life and living skills, two meals a day and a safe and welcoming environment.


We are seeking passionate, community-minded individuals to join our team and set the foundation for participants to enter self-sustainable, independent housing when it is their time to exit the program.

Days/Hours of Work: 4-5 days a week hours) 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Days of work can be discussed upon hire.

***: Reporting to the Manager of Meares Street, the Cook is primarily responsible for planning and developing menus and meal calendars and delivering healthy food for participants with a range of diets. They will ensure that ordering is completed on time, staying within the allotted budget. The Cook will also respond to emergencies as needed, including overdoses.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Using Canada's Food Guide to develop menu plans and recipes that take into consideration special diets, and food allergies
  • Oversees kitchen staff and volunteers by performing duties such as assigning work, providing feedback and evaluation, determining training requirements, orienting new staff, and ensuring staff certifications are current
  • Ensures that all kitchen staff and volunteers work using safe work procedures, adhere to FoodSafe, best practices, and follow Beacon Community Services Health and Safety Program and Policy and Procedures
  • Collaborates with the Manager for probationary and quarterly performance reviews for kitchen staff
  • Performs administrative duties such as estimating food and supply requirements based on menus and inventory levels, placing food orders with external suppliers, receiving supplies, checking invoices against orders and goods received, storing and distributing supplies, and contacting suppliers to obtain and provide information. Monitors food service expenditures
  • Performs inventory control duties like storing and rotating food supplies and recording inventory quarterly
  • Performs cleaning duties such as cleaning food preparation equipment, kitchen and storage areas, ovens and freezers, and removing garbage
  • Washes, scrubs and rinses pots, pans and dishes by hand or automatic dishwasher
  • Monitors the functioning of equipment and works with the Manager to ensure that malfunctions, maintenance and repairs are completed promptly
  • Completes and maintains related records and documentation and provides information to the Manager as required for informing reports, budget, etc
  • Responding to emergencies and crises within the building as needed; overdoses etc
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional Cook Training Certificate, or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years of recent experience in a kitchen
  • Experience cooking for large groups meals for 50+
  • Experience working with vulnerable persons is an asset
  • FOODSAFE Certification (to be renewed every 3 years)
  • Level 1 Occupational First Aid
  • Willing to take part in Naloxone Training

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to effectively use a computer and electronic devices(ordering and budgeting)
  • Ability to maintain a warm, outgoing personality with a customer service focus
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to operate related equipment
  • Skilled at setting professional boundaries
