About Us:


Facilities Management is responsible for the
planning, development, construction, operation, maintenance, and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites, and services within Western's campus community.

We work closely with campus partners to coordinate new construction and renovation projects as well as to complete maintenance and service requests.

Facilities Management maintains over 9 million square feet of space in 100+ buildings that are joined together by 16kms of roadway and sidewalks situated on more than 500 acres of land.

Our division employs 450 members in a variety of capacities and provides services including:


  • Campus mail services
  • Caretaking Services
  • Capital planning, design & development
  • Client Service work requests
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Heating & cooling
  • Infrastructure support
  • Keys (Building, office door)
  • Maintenance (Scheduled and emergencies)
  • New construction project management
  • Waste and recycling

Responsibilities:

The Summer Student
  • Facilities Operations
will provide support to one of the following trades shops in Facilities Operations for the duration of the contract. One (1) Summer Student position is available for each shop, for a total of 5 vacancies.

  • ACMF (Air-Conditioning and Metal Fabrication) Services (ACMF Shop)
  • Electrical/Controls Services (Electrical & Controls Shop)
  • Electromechanical Services (Electromechanical (Motor) Shop)
  • Plumbing-Steam fitting Services (Plumbing & Fitting Shop)
  • Structural Services (carpentry, lock shop, paint shop)
Each incumbent will have responsibility for carrying out activities that require some specialization of skills.

Each incumbent will be responsible for providing support to staff within their assigned trade shop, and for effectively carrying out a variety of tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions received from their supervisor.

Each incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their work team and other members of the Western community.

General Duties

  • Support specialty crew within assigned shop through execution of handson tasks in maintenance and construction project settings
  • Duties may include: working with power tools, transporting materials and maintaining a clean work environment
  • Adhere to prescribed work practices Western's health and safety policies
  • Other duties as assigned and will vary depending on the assigned shop

Qualifications:


Education:


  • Must be a student returning to studies in the Fall

Experience:


  • Previous work experience in a similar role or within the department

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
  • Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
  • Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
  • Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western's policies and procedures
  • Ability to multitask and maintain an organized work environment
  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
  • Preferred: knowledge of Western University's campus and the Division of Facilities Management
  • Preferred: G2 Driver's License and clean driver's abstract
  • Required: Successful completion of POET (Post Offer Employment Testing)
