Position Overview


This position will be responsible for overseeing and administering various employee benefits, including but not limited to health and dental insurance, RRSP, disability, life and AD&D.

To be successful as a Benefits Specialist, you must be knowledgeable about employee benefits and be comfortable working with numbers.

You must have strong communication skills to educate employees about their benefits and process benefits deductions accurately via payroll. You also will be organized, have a can-do attitude, and have strong attention to detail.


Benefits Coordinator Responsibilities:


  • Customer Service _
  • Answer daytoday questions and concerns about coverage, eligibility and plan changes
  • Assist employees with online and paper enrollment in benefits programs (health, dental, disability, life, EFAP)
  • Collect outstanding benefits premiums from staff on leave (paternity, WSBC, disability)
  • Benefit Administration _
  • Update UKG each pay period (entering changes, creating/deleting codes, review deductions for accuracy). Process benefits terminations.
  • Update employee/member information with carriers (e.g., name, address, wage, coverage eligibility etc.)
  • Verify all insurance billing and invoices. Work with accounting on reconciling the total cost for various benefits options
  • Update employee database and files, as it relates to employee benefits
  • Oversee RRSP management, including enrollment, withdrawal monitoring, termination, contribution reports and communication
  • Maintain and coordinate hours with apprentices and department managers for the ITA
  • Payroll Backup_
  • Support vacation coverage when payroll is away, or there is overflow work due to high volume
  • Process terminations, generate record of employment, and complete timely payroll tasks when payroll supervisor is unavailable
  • Health and Safety_
  • Ensure that self and others adhere to Canstar's health and safety practices and procedures
  • Ensure good housekeeping is kept to perform work safely and efficiently
  • Understand safety policies and protocols
  • Ensure that self and others on site are wearing all required PPE, when required

Benefits Coordinator Requirements:


  • 1+ year experience in payroll and/or human resources, with benefits experience.
  • Experience with UKG (UltiPro/Ultimate Kronos Group) or other benefit/payroll software is considered an asset.
  • Post secondary education human resources, payroll, accounting, or related field.
  • Proactive mindset and desire to provide exceptional internal customer service. Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
