Contract - 6 Months


Under the direction of the Supervisor, Animal Services & Parking Enforcement, the Animal Services Officer is responsible to identify, investigate and enforce all Regulatory Animal Services by-laws and ensure compliance through inspections and enforcement related to Provincial and Municipal legislation.

This includes, but is not limited to resolving and reporting offenses, issuing Notices of Violations, Muzzle Orders, and Dangerous Dog Orders.

Completes all aspects of inspection and investigation processes laying charges in situations of non-compliance.

Maintains detailed notes, completes investigation reports, and follows cases to completion through the Administrative Monetary Penalty System, (AMPS) or attends court to give evidence related to specific individual cases.

Job Requirements

  • Postsecondary diploma in Veterinary Technology, Law Enforcement, or animalrelated experience, or related field and/or combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated related experience working in animal control including experience with enforcement processes as it relates to animal control, municipal, and provincial legislation.
  • Experience or familiarity with euthanizing practices to deal with sick or injured animals is an asset.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, dispute resolution, and customer service skills including demonstrated ability in dealing with the public, as well as handling difficult individuals, and ability to deescalate contentious situations.
  • Demonstrated oral and written skills regarding legal documentation; report writing, attention to detail and accuracy are required.
  • Strong investigative/research, analytical/problem solving, mediation and effective resolution, organizational and time management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and the ability to interpret applicable government regulatory bylaws, provincial court proceedings, municipal and provincial legislation such as The Municipal Act, Dog Owners Liability Act, Provincial Animal Services Welfare Act (PAWS), Canadian Evidence Act, Health and Safety Act, and others as applicable.
  • Due to the responsibilities of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.
  • Class "G" Driver's License in good standing and a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business is required.
  • Availability to work outside normal working hours to conduct investigations, provide information at public information sessions, Ward Meetings, and other public events.
