In this role you will provide oversight on multiple complex community safety portfolios. The position works collaboratively with all levels of the Corporation as well as externally with key partners. Reporting to the Director of the Safe and Healthy Communities section, and participating as a member of the Social Development extended branch leadership team, the Manager, Community Safety Initiatives, is responsible for providing leadership on municipal initiatives that make the city safer, and supports strong socioeconomic conditions to sustain improved safety.


The Supervisor, Community Safety Initiatives is responsible for:

  • Leading complex & high profile community safety related initiatives & strategies
  • Providing oversight, strategic direction and leadership to staff responsible for the project management and delivery of such initiatives
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally to the organization to support Safety initiatives and partnerships
  • Developing and maintaining required working groups, steering committees, and related partnership governance structures, documents (MOUs) and information sharing protocols amongst stakeholders in collaborative multidisciplinary projects
  • Responding to council inquiries and prepare related council reports as requested
  • Analyzing police and social data to identify community trends and issues and to inform strategic direction and approach
  • Development and implementation of strategic approaches to community safety and/or social development to help address root causes of social disorder and situate Edmonton at the forefront of safest cities nationally and globally
  • Leading, coaching, and guiding staff to ensure operational and staff needs are met
  • Providing oversight and leadership to professional staff, including development of annual work plans to achieve performance measures in alignment with Corporate priorities
  • Overseeing, developing, implementing and monitoring team budgets, work plans, protocols, and related policies and procedures

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a University degree such as social science, criminology, social work, business, or a related field, International education and experience is welcome
  • 7 years of professional experience in social service and/or public safety, or in a related field, and managing complex projects/initiatives in large organizations
  • Experience providing leadership and supervision to professional staff working to address complex issues
  • Experience in strategy and program development
  • Experience in partnership development, strategic planning, and evaluation
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with partners and internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, project management, conflict resolution, interdisciplinary team building and supervisory skills
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, work diplomatically and persuasively with community groups, agencies, organizations and external/ internal partners
  • Keen sensitivity and understanding of the political process involved in gaining support and approval of recommendations/initiatives
  • Ability to think strategically, analyze results and demonstrate familiarity with performance measures and outcomes frameworks
  • Demonstrated understanding of Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+), social determinants of health, antiracism, Indigenous equity, and traumainformed practice
  • Human Resources experience including effective change management, recruitment, coaching, performance development and management within a unionized environment is considered an asset
  • Hire is dependent upon an Enhanced Security Clearance from Edmonton Police Service satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
